London’s Metropolitan Police said they made 53 arrests on June 1st following a pitch invasion and attempts to breach security at the Wembley Stadium in Wembley, England (UK) ahead of the Champions League final between the LaLiga club Real Madrid CF and the Bundesliga team Borussia Dortmund.

‘Reuters’ stated that Dani Carvajal (Spanish footballer) and Vinicius Junior (Brazilian footballer) scored second-half goals as Real claimed a 2-0 win and lifted a record-extending 15th European Cup.

The 90,000-capacity Wembley Stadium is an association football stadium in Wembley, London (UK). It opened in 2007 on the site of the original Wembley Stadium, which had stood from 1923 until 2003. The stadium is England’s national football stadium and thus hosts the majority of the England national football team home matches and The Football Association (FA) Cup Final – the final of England’s primary domestic club football competition. It is widely regarded as one of the most iconic football stadiums in the world and is considered a hub for the English game.

London (UK)-based the Football Association (FA) is the governing body of association football in England and the Crown Dependencies of Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man. Formed in 1863, it is the oldest football association in the world and is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the amateur and professional game in its territory.

The Real Madrid is a Spanish professional football club based in Madrid, Spain. The club competes in LaLiga, the top tier of Spanish football. Founded in 1902 as the Madrid Football Club, the club has traditionally worn a white home kit since its inception. The 85,000-capacity Santiago Bernabéu Stadium serves as their home field.

The Borussia Dortmund, or BVB, is a German professional sports club based in Dortmund, North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany). It is best known for its men’s professional football team, which plays in the Bundesliga, the top tier of the German football league system. The 81,365-capacity Signal Iduna Park serves as the home ground.

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Champions League is an annual club association football competition organized by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and contested by the top-division European clubs, deciding the competition winners through a round robin group stage to qualify for a double-legged knockout format and a single leg final.

Nyon (Switzerland)-based the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) is one of the six continental bodies of governance in association football. It governs football, futsal and beach football in Europe and the transcontinental countries of Turkey, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Kazakhstan, as well as the West Asian countries of Cyprus, Armenia and Israel. The UEFA consists of 55 national association members. Since 2022, due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the FIFA and UEFA suspended all Russian national teams and clubs from any FIFA and UEFA competitions.

‘Reuters’ further stated that a pitch invasion occurred during the first minute of the game, with three separate pitch invaders coming onto the field. The police added that they had also arrested several people for trying to enter the game without tickets.

Averred Louise Puddefoot, Metropolitan Police Commander, said in a statement, “We are confident that the overwhelming majority of attempts to unlawfully gain access to Wembley this evening (June 1st) were unsuccessful thanks to the efforts of the officers, stewards and the other stadium staff. The officers have made 53 arrests at Wembley – five for pitch invasion and the majority of others for attempts to breach security. The major sporting events often attract attempts by those without tickets to bypass the perimeter fencing or otherwise gain entry. There is a robust policing operation in place to support the Wembley security plan and the officers have worked closely with the stewards and the stadium staff to maintain security throughout.”

The Wembley Stadium said it “condemned the actions” of the pitch invaders.

A spokesperson for Wembley Stadium said, “All of the individuals have now been arrested. We will support the relevant authorities to ensure appropriate action is taken.”

In 2021, the EURO 2020 final between England and Italy at the Wembley Stadium was marred by clashes between the fans and the officials in and around the venue, with several fans attempting to enter the stadium without tickets.
