UEFA women soccer show a crowd-puller

The UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 final between England and Germany has broken the attendance record for any European Championship final, after attracting a crowd of 87,192 at the Wembley Stadium in London (UK) on July 31^st.

Hosts England won their first UEFA Women’s Championship title by beating Germany 2-1 after extra time in the final.

‘90 MIN’ stated that all those fans saw England win an historic match in extra time, with Chloe Kelly ensuring she will forever be remembered as a Lionesses legend. Ella Toone had put the hosts ahead with a wonderfully composed lob, but German footballer Lina Magull had equalized to force another 30 minutes.

The 2022 Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) European Women’s Football Championship, commonly referred to as UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 or simply EURO 2022, was the 13^th edition of the UEFA Women’s Championship, the quadrennial international football championship organized by UEFA for the women’s national teams of Europe. It was the second edition since it was expanded to 16 teams. The tournament was hosted by England, and was held from July 6^th to July 31^st.

The 90,000-capacity Wembley Stadium is a football stadium in Wembley, London (UK). It opened in 2007 on the site of the original Wembley Stadium, which was demolished from 2002 to 2003. The stadium hosts major football matches including home matches of the England national football team, and the FA Cup Final.

‘90 MIN’ further stated that the attendance figure surpassed the previous mark set at the men’s tournament back in 1964 when 79,115 spectators attended the final between Spain and Soviet Union at the 81,044-capacity Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid, Spain.

It also marks the second time that the Women’s European Championship attendance record has been broken this Summer alone, after the opening fixture between England and Austria at the 74,310-capacity Old Trafford in Greater Manchester, England (UK) drew a crowd of 68,781.

Attendance for the tournament as a whole before the final stood at 487,683, already more than double the women’s competition record previously set five years ago when Netherlands hosted a successful Euro 2017. With the final attendance now included, the figure sees EURO 2022 pass the 574,000 mark for total number of spectators going to games across the tournament.

The world record attendance for a women’s football match remains the figure of 91,648 set by the Primera División team FC Barcelona Femení (Spain) and the Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg Women (Germany) during the pair’s Champions League semi-final first leg held at the 99,354-capacity Spotify Camp Nou in Barcelona, Spain, in April 2022.
