The Malaysia Stadium Corporation (PSM) will soon be partnering with the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) to create a ‘Wembley Stadium-experience’ at the Kuala Lumpur Sports City (KLSC), in Bukit Jalil, Malaysian state news agency Bernama reported.

PSM board member Radzi Tajuddin said that PSM and FAM would be making an official announcement on their collaboration sometime in May.

“The idea is there but I can’t disclose it right now. But something big is coming up, probably in a month’s time. We are trying to finalise some minor details in order to make this place the ‘Wembley of Malaysia’,” he told reporters.

PSM chairman Tan Sri Tony Fernandes said he was very optimistic on making KLSC the ‘Wembley of Malaysia’, where it could generate income for the country. He said PSM wished build more Wembley-like experiences inside the stadium, with great restaurants, merchandise shops and even entertainment.

“In Wembley, there’s great food, merchandise, and also entertainment on non-match days. People still can come to the stadium even though there is no match on that day,” he said.

So if you go to Old Trafford or Wembley, there’s a museum, shops and restaurants. It’s different than what KLSC is right now. You come here, there’s nothing to see. In KLSC, most of the action is outside, there’s nothing inside the stadium,” Fernandes said, adding that PSM would work closely with sports associations to make it happen.

Commenting further, Tony said he wanted to make the stadium not just a place for sporting events but also concerts, conferences or anything that could generate income for the nation.

“We want to use these facilities to generate income for Malaysia, create more jobs. Firstly, we have to make sure the entertainers come to our country. Second, make these assets useful, and lastly, make sure we look after the facilities,” he said.

KLSC’s Datuk Nalgunalingam will be a speaker at the forthcoming Coliseum Summit ASIA-PACIFIC, Beijing, China, on May 15-16, 2019, when he is expected to reveal more details about the project.
