A record number of fans packed the Wembley Stadium in Wembley, England (UK) to watch the three play-off finals, the English Football League (EFL) announced.

‘BBC SPORT’ stated that the matches attracted an aggregate attendance of 211,858 – well above the previous record total of 197,550 that watched the play-offs at the end of the 2007-2008 seasons.

The 90,000-capacity Wembley Stadium, currently branded as the Wembley Stadium connected by EE for sponsorship reasons, is an association football stadium in Wembley, London (UK). It opened in 2007 on the site of the original Wembley Stadium which had stood from 1923 until 2003.

Preston (UK)-based the English Football League (EFL) is a league of professional football clubs from England and Wales (UK). Founded in 1888 as the Football League it is the oldest football league in the world and was the top-level football league in England from its foundation until 1992 when the top 22 clubs split from it to form the Premier League, the top of the English football league system. The Football League was rebranded as the English Football League (EFL) starting with the 2016-2017 seasons.

‘BBC SPORT’ further stated that the Premier League team Sunderland A.F.C.’s 2-1 victory over the Championship team Sheffield United F.C. in the May 24th Championship Final securing the ‘The Black Cats’ return to top-flight football after eight years was attended by a crowd of 82,718.

The League One showdown on May 25th when the Charlton Athletic F.C. overcame their peer team Leyton Orient F.C. 1-0 was watched by 76,193 while 50,947 saw the AFC Wimbledon defeat Walsall F.C. by the same scoreline on May 26th.
