Long-held hopes for a multifunctional arena in Frankfurt, Germany, have been given a significant boost after the City Council approved the plans in principle.

An arena for Frankfurt has been in the works for more than 20 years.

‘IQ’ stated that the 15,000-capacity venue would host concerts and other events as well as serving as the home venue for the local professional basketball club Skyliners Frankfurt and the ice hockey team Löwen Frankfurt.

The Skyliners Frankfurt, currently known as the Fraport Skyliners for sponsorship reasons, are a professional basketball club based in Frankfurt, Germany. Their home arena is the 5,002-capacity Süwag Energie ARENA. The club has played in the Basketball Bundesliga (the highest level league of professional club basketball in Germany) since 1999.

The Löwen Frankfurt is a professional ice hockey team based in Frankfurt, Hesse, Germany. They currently play in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (the highest division in German ice hockey). The 6,946-capacity Eissporthalle Frankfurt serves as their home ground.

‘IQ’ further stated that the proposed site is located next to the 58,000-capacity stadium Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt – home to the Bundesliga football club Eintracht Frankfurt – and a popular concert venue in itself.

Maintained Mike Josef, Frankfurt Lord Mayor, “The decision in principle now finally creates the basis for starting planning and implementation. This brings us closer to the actual goal that has been planned for this area for more than 20 years.”

The scheme, which already has planning permission, was backed by the Council at a meeting held on January 17th and will now be discussed in Parliament before reverting to the authority for the final decision.

Gunnar Wöbke, Managing Partner of Skyliners Frankfurt, “We have been waiting for the construction of a multifunctional hall for over a quarter of a century. One of my biggest dreams in life will come true if the City Council also votes ‘Yes’. We can then look to the future with real optimism.”

Frankfurt’s biggest indoor live music venue is currently the 13,500-capacity Festhalle in Frankfurt. In 2019, one of Canada’s largest private firms, The Katz Group of Companies, revealed its ambition to build the largest indoor arena in Germany next to the Frankfurt Airport but the project stalled.

The 13,500-capacity Festhalle Frankfurt, known in English as the Frankfurt Festival Arena, is a multipurpose arena located in Frankfurt, Germany. The interior of the dome at its highest reaches a height of 40 meters.

Edmonton (Canada)-based the Katz Group of Companies is a Canadian privately-owned enterprise with operations in sports and entertainment and real estate development.

Separate German arena projects are also underway in Munich where the Bavaria-based developer SWMunich Real Estate is planning a 20,000-capacity venue supported by more than €300 million of private sector investment while a City Council-backed 7,000-capacity multipurpose complex is on the cards in Würzburg (Germany).
