RCD Mallorca claims Estadi Mallorca Son Moix is the first zero-waste football stadium in Spain Image: RCD Mallorca

LaLiga club Real Mallorca’s Estadi Mallorca Son Moix has been recognised as the first Zero Waste stadium in Spain.

RCD Mallorca said this unprecedented milestone in national sport is the result of the work carried out by RCD Mallorca and PreZero over the last season to position the club as a benchmark in sustainability and the circular economy.

The certification, awarded by AENOR, makes RCD Mallorca the first team in Spain and the third in Europe to achieve the Zero Waste distinction.

The 23,142-capacity Mallorca Son Moix Stadium is located in Palma de Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain, and serves as the home ground of RCD Mallorca. It is the largest stadium in the Balearic Islands and the 26th largest in Spain.

The stadium has undergone a €30 million revamp which was concluded early last year and the work included:

  • Improvement in energy efficiency and use of clean energy with the installation of photovoltaic panels and the replacement of the current LED lighting systems.
  • The reduction of water consumption with the use and collection of rainwater.
  • Reinforcing the existing plastic recycling plan, as well as the implementation of a project for the gradual elimination of plastic usage.
  • Developing the stadium as a centre of activities related to sustainable transport and reduced energy consumption.

Alfonso Díaz, the CEO of the club’s business sector, said: “This recognition reflects our club’s real commitment to sustainability and innovation. Being pioneers in Spain is a source of pride, but also a responsibility that we firmly assume to continue leading the way towards a sport that is more respectful of the planet.”

Zero Waste’ certification does not mean that waste is no longer produced, but rather that more than 90% of the waste generated at a venue is recovered to produce recycled materials or energy.

To achieve this goal, RCD Mallorca and PreZero have implemented a comprehensive sustainability strategy at the stadium focused on separation at source and raising awareness among both club staff and fans, without whose commitment the achievement would not have been possible.

Gonzalo Cañete, CEO of PreZero Iberia, said: “This certification is first and foremost a reflection of a great collective commitment. I mean the sum of the individual commitment of each and every fan and spectator who comes to the stadium, because the system only works if we all separate waste correctly at source.

“This achievement is not a final goal, but the first step on a more ambitious path.”

During the last season, up to 16 different waste streams have been separated within the stadium, compared to the three that were previously recovered, which has allowed more than 95% of the waste to be recovered.

In total, 93.8 tonnes of waste were generated inside the stadium last year. Of this figure, 50 tonnes (52%) was municipal solid waste (MSW), such as food waste, plastic and paper, followed by packaging with 11.32 tonnes (12%) and wood with eight tonnes (9%).

David de Pastors, General Manager of Conformity Assessment at AENOR, said: “AENOR’s “Zero Waste” certification not only highlights exemplary waste management, but also demonstrates an organisational model committed to the Sustainable Development Goals and continuous improvement.

“In this way, RCD Mallorca becomes a benchmark in sport for its good environmental practices and sends a message of maximum confidence to all its stakeholders.”

David Baixauli, head of corporate projects and CSR at LaLiga, added: “At LaLiga we are delighted that one of our clubs is setting this precedent. Sustainability is already a fundamental axis of the present and future of professional sport.”

The Zero Waste certificate of the Estadi Mallorca Son Moix will debut on 16 August against the current LaLiga champions, FC Barcelona.

The week before the LaLiga kick-off, PreZero will install a giant container on the esplanade of the Fondo Norte, where fans enjoy the Fan Zone before each match. This container will highlight the tons of waste generated in the stadium.
