Sustainability main theme in Mexico venue

A new stadium – Sustainable Yucatan Stadium (ESY) – with a capacity to sit more than 30,000 people will be built in the city of Mérida in Mexico. It will be a mixed-use property which, among other things, will serve as the new home of the Venados FC of the Expansion League and the Lions of Yucatán of the LMB.

A press release issued in this regard stated that the stadium will not only generate 4,000 jobs during the construction period and 1,000 during operation, but will also bring in economic benefit of billions of pesos.

Venados FC is a Mexican semi-professional football league founded in 2020 as part of the Mexican Football Federation’s ‘Stabilization Project’. The Lions of Yucatán of the LMB is a Triple-A Minor League Baseball (MiLB) team which plays in the Mexican League. Their home games are played at Parque Kukulcán Alamo (Kukulcán Park) in Mérida, Yucatán.

Avant-garde technology will be employed and the corresponding certifications will be sought to make it the first LEED premium stadium in Mexico keeping in mind the sustainability factor which is a hot-button topic today. Private funds are expected to be injected to the tune of around 2,200 million pesos and it is estimated that the facility will go on stream by 2023.

“We are working on a world-class project, a work that will be built with the latest advances in design and engineering and with a social responsibility and sustainability as the main theme. When it begins to operate, in 2023, it will generate more than a thousand permanent jobs due to the characteristics of this stadium,” stated Mauricio Vila Dosal, Governor of Yucatán.

Game of Ball Inc., is the company who has taken on the mantle of constructing the venue, while the design, which blends modernity with Mayan details, has been lent by eminent design practice Populous, the architectural firm that has also designed the London Olympic Stadium, the remodeling of Wembley, the Tottenham’s new stadium and the New England Patriots stadium, among others.

“This stadium will place Yucatan as the sport capital of the country because it will be the only one in Mexico boasting mixed-use facility as well as sustainability. It will be a stadium that at the same time meets the highest specifications of FIFA and Major League Baseball (MLB). With this, Yucatán will have the capacity to host soccer matches of the first division or the Mexican national team,” explained the Governor.

Governor Dosal and José Antonio Téllez, Operational Director, Game of Ball Inc., presented the details of the project on Wednesday.

It will be an arena where one can practice baseball and soccer, as well as other sports, and the venue will also stage concerts and cultural shows. It will also enjoy a hotel, offices, a museum, restaurants and other added attractions.
