The Italian professional football clubs Inter Milan and AC Milan (Italy) will not be able to stride forward on their new stadium project until after the upcoming municipal elections in June, as per media reports.

Media reports also stated that the decision has been arrived at by the present City councillors to defer all matters related to the Milanese clubs’ plans for a new San Siro until after the new council is decided upon in Spring.

On June 24th, 2019, AC Milan and Inter Milan announced their intention to build a new stadium to replace San Siro. The new 60,000- capacity stadium, which would be constructed next to San Siro, is anticipated to cost US$800 million and was earlier expected to be ready for the 2022-23 seasons.

Inter Milan is the Italian professional football club based in Milan, Lombardy. Inter is the only Italian club never to have been relegated from the top flight of Italian football.

A.C. Milan is a professional football club in Milan, Italy, founded in 1899. The club has spent its entire history, with the exception of the 1980-81 and 1982-83 seasons, in the top flight of Italian football, known as Serie A since 1929-30.

San Siro, officially known as Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, is a football stadium in the San Siro district of Milan, which is the home of A.C. Milan and Inter Milan. It has a seating capacity of 75,923, making it one of the largest stadiums in Europe, and the largest in Italy.

Representatives from both clubs recently met with Milan Mayor Beppe Sala for talks, in which Inter Milan and AC Milan were asked to keep a low profile until after the elections so as to not influence their outcome in any way.

It is also reported that the British international investment firm BC Partners’ due diligence of Inter Milan’s accounts, ahead of potentially buying the club from the Chinese retail company Suning, is also slowing down the project that the clubs have in mind, which will reportedly cost in the region of €1.2 billion.

The new stadium is undoubtedly one of the issues on the negotiating table between Suning and the British-based private equity fund, considering that the new stadium could be an added value to the new owners, but at this time it is still difficult to arrive at decisions.
