‘The Reds’ venue revamp plans greenlighted

The Belgian top-flight football club Standard de Liège was finally given the nod by the concerned authorities of the Walloon region (Belgium) recently – with a lot of technical clauses attached – to get rolling the process for the rehabilitation of its residence – Stade Maurice Dufrasne.

‘The Indian Paper’ stated that the club had also made a bid in this regard in 2020 summer, but the same could not pass muster with the authorities.

Royal Standard de Liège, commonly referred to as Standard Liège, is a Belgian professional football club based in the City of Liège (Belgium). They are one of the most successful clubs in Belgium, having won the Belgian League on 10 occasions, most recently in 2007-2008 and 2008-2009.

The 27,670-capacity Stade Maurice Dufrasne is a football stadium in Liège, Belgium. The stadium holds 27,670 people. It is also known as Stade de Sclessin, from the name of the district of Liège where it is located, and is the home stadium of Standard Liège.

In August 2020, the permission required to go ahead with building the stadium was not granted by the delegated official of the Public Service of Wallonia (SPW) who demanded certain modifications in the repurposing plans.

‘The Indian Paper’ further stated that a new version of the project was then developed which received the approval of the Municipal College of Liège. Thus, the Liège football club has the permission to move forward with the project. The objective is to redevelop the enclosure of Sclessin by notably increasing the number of seats in the stands, which would go up from 28,700 to 32,126.

T2 will be raised and the angles with T3 and T4 will be closed. The roads leading to the facility will also be constructed anew, repurposing the changing rooms, proper lighting and making the esplanade more secure. The project also plans to build a set of services around the enclosure – such as offices, catering or commercial spaces. The total budget has been pegged at circa 100 million euros.

The reconfiguration work will take place in phases and will spread over several years.
