Come 2024, and the Roland-Garros Stadium (France) will boast a retractable roof on the Suzanne-Lenglen Court.

‘Roland Garros’ stated that with Paris all set to hold the Olympic Games in 2024, the Roland Garros Stadium will be totally metamorphosed and will be high on the chic quotient.

Roland-Garros Stadium is a complex of tennis courts located in Paris (France) that hosts the French Open, a tournament also known as Roland Garros. It is a Grand Slam championship tournament played annually around the end of May and the beginning of June. It is named after Roland Garros, a pioneering French aviator. The facility was constructed in 1928 to host France’s first defence of the Davis Cup.

Built in 1994 and originally designated ‘Court A’, Suzanne Lenglen Court is the secondary stadium with a capacity to hold 10,068 spectators.

‘Roland Garros’ further stated that the above development will give topmost priority to the sustainability factor. The retractable roof will cover the court and the stands and a canvas will be so designed so as to complement the pleats created by the celebrated French fashion designer Jean Patou for the skirt worn by the tennis great and legend of the stadium – Suzanne Lenglen.

Suzanne Rachel Flore Lenglen was a French tennis player. She was ranked as the inaugural world No. 1 from 1921 to 1926, winning eight Grand Slam singles titles and 21 in total, as well as 10 World Championship titles.

The architect and town planner Dominique Perrault, in charge of the project alongside French and German companies, want “to pay tribute obviously to tennis, but also to tennis from the time of Suzanne Lenglen, the 1930s, and in particular to the sartorial aspect of that period.”

In 2024, fans will be greeted with quintessence of architectural heritage, a strong symbolism and a resolutely current design when they step into the Suzanne-Lenglen Court.
