Stade de France emerge as ‘vaccinodrome’

France’s largest stadium, the Stade de France, opened on April 6^th, 2021 as its largest COVID-19 vaccination center. Since then, 30,000 people per week have been vaccinated. The stadium has been turned into a ‘vaccinodrome’.

The ‘Stade de France’ stated that the playing field is being kept aside for matches but some 2,000 square meters of space have been made available to the public, who go through the same COVID-19 protocols they would have to follow while attending a match.

President Emmanuel Macron has promised a sharp acceleration of the vaccination drive for France’s 67-million populations. He says he wants 20 million jabs administered by mid-May and 30 million by mid-June.

Fans were greeted back to France stadia on May 19^th, 2021 as under-18s were given the green light to pursue contact sports such as football, rugby and handball indoors or outdoors.

The ‘Stade de France’ further stated that amateur sport kicked back into life on May 19^th after a six-month national lockdown was imposed in France to rein in the deadly coronavirus which took a huge toll of lives in the country.

Contact sports for adults were authorized from June 9^th.

However, the above move came as little consolation for Ligue 1 club supporters as the final round of the French top flight took place on May 23^rd but the same was a closed door affair because the 9 pm kick-off time coincided with the start of the daily curfew imposed by Macron’s administration.

However, the good news is that fans will be allowed to grace Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Euro 2020 fixtures to be held at Stade de France.

The Stade de France is the national stadium of France, located just North of Paris in the commune of Saint-Denis. Its seating capacity of 80,698 makes it the seventh-largest stadium in Europe. The stadium is used by the France national football team and French rugby union team for international competition. It is the largest in Europe for track and field events, seating 78,338 in that configuration.
