Come April, and the Stade de France in Paris (France) is set to open as a COVID-19 vaccination center.

‘Le Point’ stated that the 80,000-seat stadium, which serves as the home of France’s national football and rugby union teams, will facilitate the vaccinations of “several thousand people” a week, as per the AFP news agency.

The Stade de France is the national stadium of France, located just North of Paris in the commune of Saint-Denis. Its seating capacity of 80,698 makes it the eighth-largest stadium in Europe.

Local Government and health authorities are said to be giving finishing touches to plans to open the stadium as a vaccination center. An exact opening date for the center has not yet been given.

France is fighting a bitter battle against COVID-19 like major parts of Europe with the deadly virus simply refusing to die out.

‘Le Point’ further stated that the Stade de France is located in the commune of Saint-Denis, where the current rate of COVID-19 infection is very high – 546 per 100,000 inhabitants. The maximum alert threshold set out by the local health authorities is 250 infections per 100,000 inhabitants.

The Stade de France will join 23 open vaccination centers currently running in Saint-Denis.

The above news comes on the heels of the recent announcement that the Orange Vélodrome, home of Ligue 1 football club Olympique de Marseille, would open as a vaccination center. Marseille Mayor Benoît Payan said in February that the stadium would be made available to speed up the vaccination roll-out in the region.

The vaccination center plan is still being studied by the City of Saint-Denis, the departmental council of Seine-Saint-Denis, the regional health agency and the Paris fire brigade, in partnership with the Seine prefecture.
