Malta National Football Centre in Ta Qali plans approved Image: iAS Innovative Archtitectural Structures

An application submitted by the Malta Football Association for the construction of a National Football Centre in Ta’Qali (Attard, Malta) was approved on January 21st by the relevant authorities.

The ‘Malta Football Association’ stated that this project comprises the construction of a set of facilities that would be the home of the Malta national football teams, from the very early ages through a development pathway to the elite.

The Malta Football Association is the governing body of football in Malta (small island country in the center of the Mediterranean Sea). The Association organizes the Maltese Football League and several other competitions, including a knockout competition for the top teams, called the FA Trophy.

Ta’Qali is a wide open space in the limits of Attard in Central Malta, which contains the national football stadium, the Malta Fairs & Conventions Centre, Ta’Qali National Park, a crafts village, and a national vegetable market which is locally known as the Pitkalija.

The National Football Center will also feature the latest in sports science research labs, medical facilities, physiotherapy clinic, gymnasium, dressing rooms, catering facilities, multifunction meeting and lecture rooms, relaxation room and technical offices in line with the Union of European Football Association’s (UEFA’s) Best Practice Guide to Training Centre Construction and Management. The centre has been designed with environment protection and sustainability in mind.

The ‘Malta Football Association’ further stated that the facility will also serve as the home of the development arm of the Association, the Inħobb il-Futbol Foundation, today in its early stages but considered as a key pillar of the Malta Football Association’s strategy, tasked with implementing a performance strategy through a unified football philosophy, increasing participation levels, protecting player welfare and enhancing the social mission through football.

This investment will provide a state-of-the-art practice facility that includes a Category 1 stadium for domestic, international and sports tourism use. It will also stage international matches such as the UEFA U19 Championship Finals in the Summer of 2023. The Malta Football Association has partnered with the National Development and Social Fund for the funding of this project.

Nyon (Switzerland)-based the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) is the administrative body for football, futsal and beach soccer in Europe, as well as Armenia, Cyprus, Israel, and the Asian parts of some transcontinental countries. It is one of six continental confederations of world football’s governing body FIFA. UEFA consists of 55 national association members.
