After the original certification in 2018 and the first recertification in 2020, the Olympiastadion in Berlin, Germany, was certified for the third time in May 2022 as part of the Green Globe Standard 1.7.

‘Olympiastadion Berlin’ stated that the renewed certification goes on to establish the outstanding work done by the venue as regards the sustainability quotient.

The 74,475-capacity Olympiastadion is a sports stadium at Olympiapark Berlin in Berlin, Germany. It was originally designed by the German architect, Werner March, for the 1936 Summer Olympics. During the Olympics, the record attendance was estimated to be over 100,000.

The Green Globe certification is an assessment of the sustainability performance of travel and tourism businesses and their suppliers. Organizations can monitor improvements and document successes leading to certification of their sustainable operations and management. The standard includes 44 core criteria supported by over 380 compliance indicators. The applicable indicators vary depending on the type of certification, geographic area and local factors. The entire standard is reviewed and updated twice a year.

The standard, available to all Green Globe members, covers the following areas of sustainability:

  • Management;
  • Social and Economic;
  • Cultural Heritage; and
  • Environment.

Each area contains a full set of indicators, certification policies and procedures and guidelines for auditors.

‘Olympiastadion Berlin’ further stated that since the first certification in 2018, a large number of projects have been implemented in the said venue, the significant one being the conversion of the roof lighting in favor of the energy-saving LED lighting. In January 2022, work started on the installation of a PV roof. The electricity generated by the PV system is used directly on site and will supply around 12 percent of the annual electricity requirements of the stadium.

Explained Timo Rohwedder, Managing Director of Olympiastadion Berlin GmbH, “Today, the sustainability factor is attaining more significance in the entire event industry. We would like to lead the way and offer all organizers in the Olympiastadion Berlin the opportunity to work in a responsible manner when it comes to the sustainability factor. Our goal is to make Olympiastadion Berlin totally net zero and this we can achieve only through consolidated efforts. The renewed certification as per the Green Globe standard bears testimony to the fact that we are on the right track.”

Medium-term goals for the next one to two years include comprehensive measures with regard to wheelchair spaces, such as doubling the number of wheelchair-accessible washrooms and expanding the existing spaces for wheelchair users. Further, electric charging stations are also planned in the underground car parks.
