Svelte look for Beijing Workers’ Stadium

The multipurpose Beijing Workers’ Stadium in Beijing (China), built in 1959 to mark the 10^th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, has turned into an international standard professional football stadium.

‘Xinhua’ quoted Ma Xisheng, an official from Beijing Major Projects Construction Headquarters Office, as stating recently that the two-year renovation of the stadium has been completed.

The 65,094-capacity Beijing Workers’ Stadium, often called Gongti, Gong Ti or Kung T’i, is a football stadium in the Chaoyang District of North-Eastern Beijing, China. The stadium was built in 1959, and was renovated in 2004. The stadium was closed for permanent renovation in 2020 and is all set to reopen in March this year.

Informed Li Xin, Project Manager of Beijing Construction Engineering Group, “The brand-new stadium will welcome the Beijing Guoan FC back to its home field within the year after the commercial facilities around are completed.”

The Beijing Guoan Football Club is a professional football club that currently participates in the Chinese Super League under license from the Chinese Football Association. The team is based in Chaoyang District in Beijing and their home stadium is the Workers’ Stadium with a seating capacity of 66,161.

‘Xinhua’ further stated that post-renovation, the stadium will be able to hold games under extreme weather conditions, and the position of the closest stands will be only 8.5 meters away from the pitch after the removal of the runway. In addition, the number of seats for the spectators will be increased to nearly 68,000.

Around the new stadium, there will be an urban sports park of 100,000 square meters and a lake area of 30,000 square meters. The park will provide a variety of sports facilities, such as environmentally friendly fitness tracks.

Since 1959, the stadium has hosted a series of major events, witnessed China’s sports development and worked as the home stadium of Beijing Guoan F.C. for a long time.

According to Xisheng, the design concept of the new stadium is a “traditional appearance, modern venue” which meets the FIFA standards for professional football.

The original oval shape, exterior façade and characteristic features of the stadium have been kept in its pristine form, and some important elements such as sculptures and decorations have been preserved and restored.
