PSG puts future venue ball in fans’ court

The top-of-the-heap club Paris Saint-Germain F.C. (France) wants to know the opinion of its fans before arriving at a decision on its future home venue.

‘Le Figaro’ stated that for the last several weeks, the Ligue 1 club PSG has been exploring all avenues on its future home ground. The President of the French giants, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, had recently considered buying the PSG present home ground – the Le Parc des Princes in Paris, France, but was met with stiff opposition from the Paris City Council and the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, as the City Council maintained that the club was offering “peanuts money” to buy the stadium. The club is also in line to bid for the 80,698-capacity Stade de France located just North of Paris in the commune of Saint-Denis.

The 47,929-capacity Parc des Princes is an all-seater football stadium in Paris, France. It is located to the South-West of the French capital, inside the 16^th arrondissement, near the 19,904-capacity Stade Jean-Bouin and the Stade Roland Garros. It serves as the home ground of the top-flight club PSG.

‘Le Figaro’ further stated that the possibility of building a new stadium to the West of Paris, at the Hippodrome de Saint-Cloud (racecourse in Saint-Cloud, France), has not been ruled out either. And recently, the ‘Les Rouge-et-Bleu’ took an important decision as regards their future home venue.

The PSG has decided to launch an online consultation with their “most staunch supporters” to take their pulse as regards the stadium issue.

Weighing Several Options

Presently, the PSG has four options on the table. The first is to go in for total transformation of their home pitch – the Parc des Princes whose present capacity stands at 48,000 as far as soccer matches are concerned. The first option has its own advantages. The top-flight does not have to move to any other place and they will stay connected to their roots.

The second option is to move to the Stade de France after renovating the same. But this decision of the club has very few buyers and is not going down well with the majority of the people i.e., the concerned authorities. The third option is to build a facility to the West of Paris accessible by the future Grand Paris Express Metro, within a radius of five kilometers from the Parc des Princes and in all likelihood towards the Hippodrome de Saint-Cloud. The fourth option is to build their home arena within a radius of 20 kilometers from the Parc des Princes (probably towards Poissy).

A statement sent out by the PSG read, “No final decision has been arrived at on the stadium site and a clear picture will emerge only after an online consultation with our staunch supporters.”
