Kuala Lumpur Sports City was focal point of the recently concluded the 29th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, which were held from August 19 to 30.

Showcasing world-class infrastructure, the Kuala Lumpur Sports City – the beefed up version of the Bukit Jalil Sports Complex – boasts of a massive National Stadium at its heart. The multi-million project spearheaded by Malaysian Resources Corp. Berhad (MRCB) and Populous also features the refurbished National Aquatic Centre, the Axiata Arena, the National Hockey Stadium and a sprawling plaza.

The 2017 SEA Games were attended by thousands of athletes, officials, media, and visitors from Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, Philippines, Brunei, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Vietnam, and Malaysia.

The National Aquatics Centre was the venue for diving, swimming, synchronized swimming and water polo between August 15-30 with 58 gold medals at stake. The National Stadium witnessed athletics being contested from August 19-26.

Axiata Arena was the venue for badminton on August 22-29 with seven gold medals on offer. Field hockey was played at the National Hockey Stadium on August 22-29 with two gold to be won.

The stadiums will not be closed for the phase two works which are scheduled to commence after the Sea Games.

“Given the facilities are now compliant with the latest standards of [world track and field body] IAAF, [world soccer body] FIFA, [world hockey body] FIH, and [world aquatics body] FINA, Malaysia is now ready to host the next era of world-class sports competitions as well as showcase national and international non-sporting events”, Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB) general manager S. Nalgunalingam was quoted by local media as saying just before the SEA Games were inaugurated.

The Bulkit Jalil National Stadium Jalil can accomodate 85,000 people and is considered as the largest stadium in Southeast Asia.

More details on these venues will be available at the next Coliseum Summit ASIA-PACIFIC, October 25-26, 2017 in Beijing, China.
