National Stadium Bosnia and Herzegovina detailed plans Image: Bosnia and Herzegovina Football Association

The Bosnian football federation has completed the conceptual design for the country’s new national stadium in Zenica, marking the beginning of one of the most significant projects in the history of football in the country.

Bosnia’s National Football Association said that in the coming years, the venue will provide a modern working environment for all national teams and long-term improvements to the football environment in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The new FIFA and UEFA compliant stadium will be built on the existing Bilino Polje site and become the home of NK Čelik Zenica as well as its national teams.

Čelik is active in the First League of Bosnia’s FBiH, having previously played in the Bosnian Premier League before getting relegated in the 2019–20 season.

Under the current concept, the stadium will be delivered through phased reconstruction and expansion of the existing Bilino Polje site rather than an entirely new greenfield venue.

Early public statements and visualisations envisage a mid-sized, practical arena with a capacity in the region of 17,000–18,000 seats — large enough for international fixtures while remaining aligned with local demand and the city’s scale.

FFBiH President Vico Zeljković said: “I’m pleased to share that the conceptual design for the national stadium in Zenica is complete. It’s the foundation for the upcoming infrastructure project of the Football Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, based on which we’ll develop the preliminary and main design.”

Timelines released by the federation indicate the project documentation is expected to be completed by August 2026, after which construction would begin.

A phased delivery would allow play to continue at the site and to spread costs and minimise disruption; several sources place an optimistic completion window around 2029, although exact phasing and the final schedule remain dependent on funding and approvals.

Zeljković added, “This is a long-term step forward for the development of BiH football and the creation of better conditions for all national teams, as well as a new home for NK Čelik.

“The financing model is yet to be defined, but we’re already considering several sustainable options that could ensure full project realization. We’ll continue working ambitiously, strategically, and responsibly.”

An important administrative milestone for the scheme came with a formal agreement between the Football Federation and the Zenica-Doboj Canton government, signed in 2025, which frames cooperation on building and using the national stadium at Bilino Polje.

Questions over the stadium project remain, however, notably precise budget figures, contractor selection, and whether any scope changes will alter capacity or timeline — but the conceptual unveiling marks a notable shift from idea to implementable plan.

For fans in Zenica, and for Bosnian football more broadly, Bilino Polje’s transformation now looks likely to proceed from concept to construction in the coming years.
