Riyadh’s (Saudi Arabia) King Fahd Sport City Stadium will host the opening and closing matches of next year’s Asian Cup, officials announced recently with the football showpiece seen as a precursor to the 2034 World Cup in Saudi Arabia.

‘ARAB NEWS’ stated that Saudi Arabia was awarded the World Cup but first will host the Asian Cup from January 7th-February 5th, 2027.

The King Fahd Sport City Stadium is a sport venue in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It is one of the stadiums dedicated to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup™ and the 2027 Asian Cup. It is also a multipurpose sport facility that is overseen by the Ministry of Sport. The stadium was inaugurated during the reign of King Fahd Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud in 1988. It is located in the Northeast of the capital Riyadh, specifically on the Prince Bandar Bin Abdulaziz Road in al-Mu’ayzilah Neighborhood.

The 2027 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup will be the 19th edition of the AFC Asian Cup, the quadrennial international Men’s football championship of Asia organized by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). The tournament will involve 24 national teams after the expansion in 2019. It will be held in Saudi Arabia from January 7th– February 5th, 2027.

Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia)-based the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) is the governing body of association football, beach soccer and futsal in most countries and territories in Asia. The AFC was formed in 1954. It has 47 members.

The 2034 FIFA World Cup™ will be the 25th FIFA World Cup™, a quadrennial international football tournament contested by the Men’s national teams of the member associations of FIFA. In December 2024, Saudi Arabia was formally confirmed as the host nation by FIFA following an uncontested bidding process. It will be the third tournament hosted in Asia after South Korea and Japan in 2002 and Qatar in 2022. Saudi Arabia will be the second host nation from the Arabian Peninsula in the space of 12 years. It will also be the first time the tournament is hosted by a single nation since 2022.

‘ARAB NEWS’ further stated that the AFC said in a statement in Kuala Lumpur, “The King Fahd Sports City Stadium … will provide the backdrop for both the eagerly anticipated Final as well as the Opening match featuring the hosts and the three-time Asian champions Saudi Arabia.”

The 70,000-plus venue in Riyadh will also host four Group Stage battles, a Round of 16 tie and a Quarterfinal match before the Final in early February, the AFC added.

Popularly known as ‘The Tent’ because of its roof, inspired by a traditional Bedouin (nomadic Arab tribes) dwelling, the stadium is the largest of the eight venues hosting the soccer showpiece.

The Asian Cup matches will also be played in Jeddah and Alkhobar.

The match pairings and kickoff times will be confirmed at the AFC’s final draw on April 11th in Riyadh, the AFC said.

Qatar, the 2022 World Cup host, staged and won the Asian Cup two years ago.

The tournament was supposed to take place in China in 2023 but was moved out of the country because of the country’s COVID policies at the time.

Meanwhile, the 26,000-seater King Saud University Stadium in Riyadh will host five Group Stage matches as well as one Round of 16 encounters on January 25th with the 30,000-capacity Kingdom Arena in Riyadh – also capable of holding 26,000 – providing the setting for four Group Stage fixtures and one Round of 16 on January 22nd and the Quarterfinal tie on January 28th apiece.

Rounding up the action in Riyadh the 25,000-seater Imam Mohammed Ibn Saud University Stadium will serve as the venue for the five Group Stage showdowns and one Round of 16 tie on January 23rd whilst the 13,000-capacity Al Shabab Stadium will host four Group Stage encounters and one Round of 16 contest on January 22nd.

In Jeddah, the 60,000-capacity King Abdullah Sports City Stadium – the tournament’s second-largest venue – will provide the battleground for five Group Stage matches and one fixture each in the Round of 16 (January 25th), Quarterfinals (January 28th) and Semifinals (February 2nd). Able to welcome 26,000, the Prince Abdullah Al Faisal Sports City Stadium is set to host the four Group Stage clashes and one Round of 16 tie on January 24th.

Finally, the stadium in Al Khobar – the new state-of-the-art 45,000-seater venue that is nearing completion – will play host in every stage of the competition other than the Final comprising the four Group Stage duels, a Round of 16 tie on January 23rd, a Quarterfinal fixture on January 29th, and the first Semifinal on February 1st.

The match pairings and the kickoff times will be confirmed following the AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027™ Final Draw which will take place on April 11th, 2026 in the evening at the historic At-Turaif World Heritage Site in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The four remaining spots to the showpiece remain on offer and will be decided after the final matchday of the Qualifiers Final Round on March 31st.

Team Base Camps

The 19th edition of Asia’s crown jewel will feature the Team Base Camp (TBC) concept – a first in the history of the AFC’s competitions.

Aimed at enhancing the ease of the participating teams’ movements throughout the tournament the new initiative will see the allocation of a dedicated TBC hotel and training site to each team for the duration of their stay. Furthermore, the teams will also be provided with venue-specific facilities when moving across the various venues.
