Estadio Nemesio Camacho El Campín in Bogotá to be built by PowerChina Image: Sencia Bogotá on Facebook

The new Estadio Nemesio Camacho El Campín stadium project (Bogotá, Colombia) has a new player. The Chinese multinational PowerChina has reportedly been selected by the private concessionaire Sencia as the contractor in charge of building the new stadium.

‘EE’ stated that the above news comes amid controversy over the El Campín Stadium renovations.

With the entry of PowerChina the renovation of the El Campín Stadium enters a decisive phase.

Timeline Questions

The information about PowerChina comes to light precisely when the project is facing questions about its timeline. The new stadium is part of the renovation project for the El Campín Cultural and Sports Complex, a public-private partnership (PPP) that includes an estimated private investment of around $2.4 trillion and the construction of a completely new stadium as well as other sports, cultural and commercial spaces.

Construction Delay

The main construction work has not yet begun. The project remains on hold awaiting the completion of procedures, including the approval of the Transit and Transportation Study by the District Secretariat of Mobility, a requirement to move forward with the commencement of the construction phase. The original timeline has already been modified and the delivery date initially set for December 2027 has been jeopardized by these delays.

EPC Contract

PowerChina will undertake the project under an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract which entails handling the final technical studies, contracting the suppliers, acquiring the materials, and executing the construction work.

Sports-Entertainment-Cultural District

The El Campín Stadium Project in Bogotá, Colombia, is a major public-private partnership (PPP) initiative led by Sencia to transform the historic Estadio Nemesio Camacho El Campín into a modern, world-class sports, entertainment and cultural district.

The Estadio Nemesio Camacho El Campín, commonly known as El Campín, is the main stadium of Bogotá, Colombia. It was inaugurated on August 10th, 1938, and has a capacity to hold 39,512 spectators.

Sencia is the private concessionaire and lead enterprise responsible for operating, redeveloping and managing the new Estadio Nemesio Camacho El Campín in Bogotá, Colombia.

PowerChina (officially the Power Construction Corporation of China) is a massive, State-owned Chinese enterprise specializing in heavy engineering, civil construction, power generation, and infrastructure development.

Colombia Presence

‘EE’ further stated that PowerChina has a presence in Colombia in the energy and infrastructure projects and has participated, among others, in the construction of the solar parks and the works related to Hidroituango (the largest hydroelectric power station under construction and partial operation in Colombia) and in the capital with treatment plants.

Stadium Capacity Increase

Although the increase in the stadium capacity had already been proposed by Sencia when it announced that instead of renovating the existing Estadio Nemesio Camacho El Campín a completely new one would be built on the adjacent grounds of the complex, with the arrival of the Chinese company, this increase would reach 60,000 spectators, whereas the renovation plan contemplated a maximum of 50,000.

The figure, however, would still be subject to the final architectural design and detailed engineering studies.
