A contract for the first phase of the renovations at Spanish LaLiga club Real Betis’ Benito Villamarín Stadium has been awarded to construction company Acciona.

Marca said work should begin shortly, following the demolition of the Preferencia stand, as Real Betis continues to take steps to ensure the new Benito Villamarín stadium is ready for the start of the 2028-29 season.

Real Betis Balompié, known as Real Betis, or just Betis, is a Spanish professional football club based in Seville, Andalusia, Spain. Founded in 1907 it plays in LaLiga, the top flight of Spanish football. The club plays home games at the 60,721-seat Benito Villamarín Stadium.

Real Betis said the oldest of all the stands in the current ground will give way to a modern, comfortable stand that will transform the experience for Betis fans.

This is the first step of a major project that includes the complete reconstruction of this stand, featuring new and improved spaces, including a new museum, a new official store, an auditorium, and dining areas.

The other stands will not be demolished, but they will undergo significant improvements to enhance fan comfort, including the installation of a roof and a new façade.

Club president Ángel Haro, revealed the progress in the stadium renovation.

He said, “There’s news because yesterday we awarded the contract to a construction company, Acciona, to carry out the first phase of the stadium, which includes the excavation and the retaining walls.

“We are already working on the collaborative phase, which will allow us to have a stadium that meets the economic and quality standards we set at the General Shareholders’ Meeting.

“I don’t want to commit to exact dates, but we will probably see activity on the site in a couple of weeks, possibly sooner. Excavation, machinery… this is imminent because, as I said, we awarded the contract yesterday.”

At the club’s last General Shareholders’ Meeting in December, several key aspects of the future Benito Villamarín stadium were revealed.

It must be completed by May 2028, will cost €262 million, and will involve not only the reconstruction of the Preferencia stand, demolished a few months ago, but also a complete renovation of the stadium, including a parking garage and a multi-purpose annex building on the Doctor Fleming Street esplanade.

The club hopes this project will significantly increase its revenue streams.

Real Betis is currently playing matches at the 70,000-capacity Estadio La Cartuja in Seville while the renovations at Benito Villamarín take place.
