Allegiant Stadium claims to run fully on renewable energy Image: LV Raiders

The Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Nevada (US), home of the National Football League (NFL) team Las Vegas Raiders, is now being fully powered by 100 percent renewable energy, the stadium announced recently.

‘www.8newsnow.com’ stated that with this announcement, the Allegiant Stadium is now the first NFL stadium powered exclusively by renewable energy.

The 65,000-capacity Allegiant Stadium is a domed stadium in the Western United States, located in Paradise, Nevada, Southwest of adjacent Las Vegas. Opened three years ago in 2020, it is the home field of the Las Vegas Raiders of the National Football League (NFL) and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Rebels college football team.

New York (US)-based the National Football League (NFL) is a professional American football league that consists of 32 teams, divided equally between the American Football Conference and the National Football Conference.

The Las Vegas Raiders are a professional American football team based in the Las Vegas metropolitan area. The Raiders compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference West division. The Allegiant Stadium serves as their digs.

Said Sandra Douglass Morgan, Raiders President, “The Las Vegas Raiders are proud to set the bar in sustainability not only for the NFL but for sports around the world. We have a responsibility towards our fans, players, community, and planet to tackle sustainability head-on and set a new standard for sustainability in sports. Our reach and impact extend far beyond the game.”

Working with the public utility company NV Energy, the Raiders and the Allegiant Stadium have strived to conserve energy usage at events held at the stadium. By using 100 percent renewable energy, the stadium’s environmental footprint and energy use costs will be reduced.

Las Vegas (US)-based the NV Energy is a public utility which generates, transmits and distributes electric service in Northern and Southern Nevada, including the Las Vegas Valley, and provides natural gas service in the Reno–Sparks metropolitan area of Northern Nevada.

‘www.8newsnow.com’ further stated that according to NV Energy, the renewable energy solution they identified guarantees cost stability now and for years to come for the stadium. The renewable power is produced within Nevada and serves the stadium and other NV Energy customers.

Stated Doug Cannon, NV Energy President and head honcho, “This project is emblematic of our commitment to meeting our customers’ unique energy needs and identifying an innovative path forward to meet the Raiders’ and Allegiant Stadium’s vision of being the first NFL team and stadium powered by all renewable energy. This renewable energy project is a win for the environment and demonstrates NV Energy’s ongoing commitment to powering Nevada with more sustainable energy.”

In addition to renewable energy, the other sustainability initiatives from the Allegiant Stadium include:

  • Waste Diversion – The stadium diverts waste from the landfill and currently repurposes, reuses, or donates 20 material streams;
  • Food Scrap Collection – On an average, 12,000 pounds of kitchen prep cuttings and end-of-event food scraps are collected per large stadium event;
  • Cigarette Waste Collection – The Allegiant Stadium is the first stadium in the United States to divert cigarette waste from the landfill and convert that waste into energy. More than 69,000 Watts of Energy have been created from this program; and
  • Raiders Field Grass Clippings – The stadium diverts grass clippings to the onsite biomass machine. To date, 160,800 pounds of grass clippings have been composed or diverted.
