Amélia Morais Stadium opens in Portugal

The first stadium to be built from scratch for women’s soccer in Portugal has been opened in the city of Braga.

Ground News said the Amélia Morais Stadium has been named after a historic fan of Sporting Clube de Braga.

The honour reflects not only the growth and appreciation of the sport, but also the impact of Amélia Morais on the sports culture of Braga.

The 2,500 capacity Amélia Morais Stadium is the final piece in the Braga Sports City jigsaw, and it will be home for the women’s and men’s “B” teams, as well as training teams.

Sporting Clube de Braga, commonly known as Sporting de Braga or just Braga, is a Portuguese sports club from the City of Braga, Portugal. It is best known for the professional football team playing in the Primeira Liga, the top flight of Portuguese football at the Braga Municipal Stadium.

The Braga Municipal Stadium is an all-seater football stadium located in Braga, Portugal, and the current home of Sporting Clube de Braga. It has a capacity of 30,286 spectators, making it the seventh largest football stadium in Portugal.

Fernando Gomes, president of the Portuguese Football Association (FPF) said: “This is another day of enormous significance for Sporting Clube de Braga and also for national football and sport.”

Gomes praised the club’s growth under the presidency of António Salvador.

“As President of the FPF, it is up to me to emphasize again that SC Braga has a strong, objective, supportive leadership focused on resolving the various problems that affect football at local, district and national level,” he said.

He added, “The inauguration of a stadium that will serve the women’s team, the B team and youth categories is another stage in the solidification of a sports project certified by the FPF itself, by the highest international standards.”

An inauguration ceremony culminated with a friendly match between the women’s teams of SC Braga and Paris Saint-Germain.

FIFA recently highlighted the Amélia Morais Stadium, the club’s most recent infrastructure and the last piece of SC Braga’s Sports City.

On the official website of the organization that governs football worldwide, the Amélia Morais Stadium is highlighted as being a state-of-the-art sports infrastructure, which has “a hybrid field designed to reduce common injuries in women’s football”.

Also noteworthy it says is “a high number of bathrooms, hygiene product dispensers and other specific resources for athletes.”
