The University of Florida is planning a $1.45 billion Ben Hill Griffin Stadium redevelopment project that school officials believe will nearly double annual revenue from the venue.

ESPN said the Gators unveiled renderings and details of the project at a board of trustees meeting.

The vision for the renovation is centered on preserving the defining elements that have made the venue, nicknamed The Swamp, legendary while elevating the overall fan experience for generations to come.

Key priorities include maintaining the historic seating capacity, preserving the iconic Orange Wing Walls, and protecting the unique bowl design that has defined The Swamp.

Fans will continue to sit close to the field and right on top of the action, preserving the intensity, noise, and home-field advantage that have made Ben Hill Griffin Stadium the most intimidating environment in college football.

Enhancements planned as part of the project include expanded concourses, upgraded concessions and restrooms, improved accessibility, elevated premium hospitality experiences, enhanced technology infrastructure, and state-of-the-art video and audio capabilities designed to further solidify The Swamp as the premier home field advantage in all of college football.

The University of Florida is a public land-grant research university in Gainesville, Florida (US). It is a senior member of the State University System of Florida. The University traces its origins to 1853 and has operated continuously on its Gainesville campus since September 1906.

Built in 1930 with an initial capacity of 21,769, the Ben Hill Griffin Stadium is the largest stadium in Florida. It was last renovated prior to the 2012 season with upgrades made to the West concourse.

Florida Athletics has selected Legends Global to serve as Owner’s Representative, helping guide strategic planning and project execution throughout the process. Manhattan Construction Group and Hunt Construction Group will partner as the construction management team leading the renovation effort.

Additional details regarding construction phasing, timelines, premium offerings, and future renderings will be unveiled as planning continues with the newly assembled project team.

Florida Athletic Director Scott Stricklin said, “Florida football is obviously the sport that drives the most engagement and helps support the entire UAA and all 21 sports at a high level, and Ben Hill Griffin Stadium is by far the most important asset that Florida football has.

“So it’s really important that we as an association and a university invest back into this really important asset to make sure that it cannot only continue to support our fans and our team but, like, help the program grow as we move forward where resources are going to continue to be really important.

“This is going to take a lot of resources, but I think it’s also going to generate more resources than it takes in, and it’s going to help give us an advantage when it comes online.”

The board said the transformation will “breathe new life into one of the nation’s most iconic college football venues and elevate it into the premier collegiate athletic destination that sets the standard for everyone else.”

Florida started looking at ways to upgrade The Swam” in 2018. The process was delayed by Covid-19 and ended up morphing into a “50-year solution” instead of a “short-term fix,” Stricklin said.

The Ben Hill Griffin Stadium redevelopment is expected to provide “a $65 million lift annually,” bringing total revenue from the venue to $140 million at a time when every dollar matters as the Gators look to better compete in 21 sports.

The venture is expected to be funded through a combination of private donations, capital reserves and long-term debt approved by the Florida Board of Governors.

UF Board of Trustees Chairman Mori Hosseini said, “This is an important step toward ensuring The Swamp continues to set the standard for college football environments well into the future.

“Our focus throughout this process has been on preserving the tradition, intensity, and identity that generations of Gators cherish while thoughtfully positioning the stadium for the future.”

The Ben Hill Griffin Stadium redevelopment will revamp 82 current suites, add 63 more atop the east side of the stadium, create additional premium seating areas and install state-of-the-art video boards and audio capabilities.

It includes $500 million in deferred maintenance costs, infrastructure improvements and wider aisles and handrails to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Capacity, however, will remain at 88,548 despite losing thousands of seats in the lower bowl. New suites will make up the difference, and all of those premium areas — current ones are behind glass — will be open air.

Stricklin said recent projects even remotely close to Florida’s scope include Texas A&M’s $450 million overhaul to Kyle Field in 2013-14 and Penn State’s $750 million renovation to Beaver Stadium that’s expected to be completed in 2027.

The initial proposal back in 2018 was listed at $400 million, but rising costs, coupled with UF’s efforts to maintain the stadium’s historical aspects, raised the total price.

The project is being funded through a combination of private giving, capital reserves, projected-generated revenues, financing mechanisms, including long-term debt through the approval of the Florida Board of Governors.

Construction is set to begin after the 2026 season and be finished prior to the 2030 offseason.
