Real Betis launches design competition for new stadium Image: Real Betis Balompié

The LaLiga team Real Betis Balompié announced an international design competition recently to design their revamped home venue – the Benito Villamarín Stadium in Seville, Spain. Work on the same is scheduled to start in June 2024.

‘Real Betis’ stated that Real Betis’ Board of Directors has invited the design firms to submit the documentations which will be required to participate in the competition as part of the overall redevelopment plans of the Benito Villamarín Stadium.

The Real Betis Balompié, known as Real Betis or just Betis, is a Spanish professional football club based in Seville in the autonomous community of Andalusia (Spain). Founded in 1907, it plays in the LaLiga – the men’s top professional football division of the Spanish football league system.

The Benito Villamarín Stadium is a stadium in Seville, Spain, and the home of Real Betis since its completion in 1929. It has a capacity of 60,720.

‘Real Betis’ further stated that the development will focus on a new Preferencia stand and will include improvements to the Gol Norte, Fondo and Gol Sur stands. A roof for the four stands will also be installed.

The Real Betis want a futuristic stadium where activities can be held 365 days in a year on matchdays as well as on non-matchdays and is high on the entertainment quotient. The overall scheme of things also includes cutting-edge technology and, of course, the sustainability factor.

The venue redevelopment price tag stands at circa 70 million euros. The design competition is the first step in Real Betis’ ambitious plans to spruce-up their stadium keeping in mind the needs of the present crop of fans.

The New Stadium project is one of the pillars of the Real Betis 2022-2026 Strategic Plan presented at the last general meeting of the shareholders convened by the club’s President, Ángel Haro. A multiuse venue operating both on matchdays as well as on non-matchdays – eateries, retail space – will also prove to be a shot in the arm for the top-flight’s revenue aspect.

The design firms interested in participating in the above mentioned contest must produce their experience certificates as regards the construction of first-level stadia. The deadline for submitting the requisite documents for the design competition is March 21st, 2023.
