Birmingham City F.C. deep dive into Sports Quarter plans

The English Football League (EFL) team Birmingham City F.C. has provided Brummies (people from Birmingham) with a new in-depth look at how its Sports Quarter plans could drastically transform the city of Birmingham (UK).

‘BBC’ stated that in 2024 the ‘Blues’ announced the purchase of a vacant 48-acre site in East Birmingham from the city Council and unveiled ambitious proposals to build a new stadium.
 

Sports Quarter

The Birmingham City F.C.’s wider project for a Sports Quarter around the stadium also includes proposals for a “world-class” training center, women’s stadium, an arena, and a mixed-use development with housing.

Recently, the EFL team hosted a forum to provide an update on many aspects of the Sports Quarter plans including significant transport proposals.

The club said during the forum that it will formally lodge plans for the Sports Quarter to the Birmingham City Council in March 2027.

Preston (UK)-based the English Football League (EFL) is a league of professional football clubs from England and Wales. Founded in 1888 as the Football League it is the oldest football league in the world and was the top-level football league in England from its foundation until 1992 when the top 22 clubs split from it to form the Premier League, the highest level of the English football league system. The Football League was rebranded as the ‘English Football League’ (EFL) starting with the 2016-2017 seasons.

The Birmingham City Football Club is a professional football club based in Bordesley, Birmingham, England (UK). Formed in 1875 as the Small Heath Alliance it was renamed Small Heath in 1888, Birmingham in 1905, and Birmingham City F.C. in 1943. The club competes in the Championship, the second tier of English football.

The 29,409-seat St Andrew’s Stadium, known since 2024 for sponsorship reasons as the St. Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park, is an association football stadium in the Bordesley district of Birmingham, England (UK). It has been the home ground of the Birmingham City Football Club for more than a century.

The Powerhouse Stadium

‘BBC’ further stated that the eye-catching look of The Powerhouse Stadium, with its numerous towering chimneys, was unveiled at an event last November.

There is enormous optimism among the club and the political leaders in the city that the venue will help transform the Bordesley Green (inner-city area of Birmingham, England, UK) area into a sporting and cultural destination that attracts visitors from across the world.
 

‘Complex Project’

Noted Nick Smith, Head of Infrastructure, Birmingham City F.C., “We visit the Council every single month showing them these designs so that it’s not a surprise in March 2027. What would normally take a year to determine is going to be a lot shorter.”

He added that the land was being prepared for the work, “adding value to the land and doing all the preparation, the cutting and the filling to get all the land ready so when we get planning we can start straight away. That gives us three years to build and all the contractors that we’ve spoken to believe they can build it in three years.”

Smith said the stadium could be built by 2030 but would need “nice winters and summers and we need resources to arrive. Lots of things can happen, it’s a complex project”.
 

New Train Station

Smith described the Adderley Park Station (railway station in Adderley Park, Birmingham) as a “hazard” when thousands of fans descend on it during match day – “So, we are now moving that into the Sports Quarter and building a new train station. The new station would have 12 carriages and be able to cope with 60,000 plus people [coming] out of the stadium.”

There are also plans for a coach station that will transport the fans to and from the City Centre and the Curzon Street Station.
 

Tram Route

It was announced last year that funding had been secured from the Government for a new tram route to be built out to East Birmingham and the Sports Quarter project area.

This funding was part of a £2.4 billion Government boost to the West Midlands transport network announced by the Government last summer.

Those behind this ambitious project have said they want the new stadium and the Sports Quarter to sit at the heart of the community and benefit the residents on non-match days.
 

‘Character Zones’

 
With this in mind Smith unveiled four ‘character zones’ around the stadium. These were:

• The Blues Square – The Blues Club, flagship retail, food and beverage (F&B) offer, and The Yards – retail take over with digital projections, hanging sculptures, etc;
• The Market Street – The Market Hall and Street;
• The Terraces – Green places for families, play and everyday life; and
• The Canal – A waterside setting for evening life with dining, drinks and cultural events that “connect to the wider city”.
