Automated venue technology helps Edgbaston stadium Image: Edgbaston

The Edgbaston Stadium in Birmingham, England (UK) is pioneering smart energy management through iVvy and Lightwave integration.

Net-zero Ambitions

‘edgbaston.com’ stated that the Edgbaston Stadium has become one of the first venues in the United Kingdom to deploy an innovative integration between iVvy and Lightwave thus helping automate energy use across the stadium’s event spaces and thus supporting sustainability and net-zero ambitions.

The 25,000-seat Edgbaston Cricket Ground in the Edgbaston area of Birmingham, England (UK) is home to the Warwickshire County Cricket Club. The Edgbaston Stadium has also been the venue for Test matches, One-Day Internationals and Twenty20 Internationals.

The Warwickshire County Cricket Club is one of 18 first-class County clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales (UK). It represents the historic county of Warwickshire.

iVvy is a cloud-based venue management platform used to book and schedule events, conferences and meetings.

Lightwave is a smart home and commercial automation system that controls the electrical devices like lights and smart sockets.

‘Smart Solution’

Remarked Lydia Carrington, Sustainability Manager, Edgbaston Stadium, “It’s a smart yet simple solution that delivers real value in energy and cost savings. We’ve seen benefits straight away thus making it easy to trust the technology and roll it out confidently.”

Adjusting Energy Use

The above integration automatically controls and adjusts energy use in their event spaces based on the booking schedules. By aligning the power consumption with the actual room usage the stadium is actively lowering the operational costs, cutting energy waste and supporting its net-zero sustainability ambitions.

Eco-friendly Goals

This cutting-edge system helps the historic stadium automate and optimize its power usage to reach its eco-friendly goals.

The stadium links its event booking software with the smart building hardware to save energy automatically.

The Integration

‘edgbaston.com’ further stated that when an event is booked or ends iVvy talks directly to Lightwave. The system automatically turns on the heating, the cooling and the lights for a specific room when needed and shuts them down the moment the event finishes.

Why this Matters for Edgbaston

Zero Waste: It prevents electricity from being wasted in the empty hospitality suites or the corporate Boxes.

Net-Zero Goals: This technology is a core piece of the Edgbaston Stadium’s wider Edgbaston 4 Sustainability pledge which aims to make the stadium completely net zero by 2030.

Immediate Savings: According to the Edgbaston Stadium’s sustainability team the stadium saw instant drops in both energy consumption and operational costs right after rolling it out.

The Edgbaston 4 Sustainability pledge is the Edgbaston Stadium’s commitment to operate as the United Kingdom’s most sustainable cricket ground and achieve a net zero carbon footprint by 2030.
