Boone Pickens Stadium maiden drop-the-puck ice hockey event

For the first time the Boone Pickens Stadium will host the maiden ice hockey game when the Oklahoma State (US) hosts the hockey team – the Oklahoma State Cowboys – at 6 pm on January 30^th, 2027.

The 52,305-seat Boone Pickens Stadium (previously known as the Lewis Field) is a college football stadium in South Central United States located on the campus of the Oklahoma State University (a public land-grant research university) in Stillwater, Oklahoma (US).

The Oklahoma State Cowboys hockey team is the official men’s ice hockey club of the Oklahoma State University (US). They compete at the Division II level in the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA – a college ice hockey association).

The 500-seat Oilers Ice Center (now also referred to as the WeStreet Ice Center) in Tulsa, Oklahoma (US) is the official home arena and practice facility for the Oklahoma State Cowboys Hockey Team.

‘Noise Night’

‘OKLAHOMA STATE’ quoted Kaden Nelson, OSU hockey captain, as stating, “Playing hockey in the Boone Pickens Stadium is something you don’t get to do twice. There’s going to be a lot of noise that night. A lot of people are going to come to see something they’ve never seen before. We’re coming to give them something they won’t forget. There have been a lot of sacrifices and dedication for this moment. We’re there to make a statement.”

Rolling to Victory

The Oklahoma State Cowboys and the Oklahoma Sooners ice hockey team faced each other at the 19,199-seat BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in February with more than 15,000 tickets sold and the Oklahoma State Cowboys rolling to a 13-2 victory. The ‘Pokes’ went on to play in the American Collegiate Hockey Association Men’s Division 2 national championship game later in the season.

‘Watch Bedlam’

Commented Chad Weiberg, OSU Athletic Director, “This is a historic event that reflects the remarkable growth of Cowboy Hockey in recent years. Our students, the alumni, the fans, the community, and the State will be able to see on full display the bold innovation of OSU Hockey and watch Bedlam (attending or watching a competitive sporting event between the Oklahoma State University Cowboys and the University of Oklahoma Sooners) in the Boone Pickens Stadium.”

College Hockey Games

The college hockey games have been played in the football venues dating back to 2001 with some of the most notable including a 2010 clash between Michigan (the University of Michigan Wolverines men’s ice hockey team) and the Michigan State (Michigan State Spartans men’s ice hockey team) that was played in front of 104,713 fans at the 107,600-capacity Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor and a 2026 game between the Michigan State and the Penn State that was played in front of 74,575 fans at the 106,304-capacity Beaver Stadium in Pennsylvania State University in the University Park (State College), Pennsylvania.

The Penn State Hockey refers to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I ice hockey programs representing the Pennsylvania State University (the Nittany Lions) based in University Park, Pennsylvania.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is a nonprofit organization that regulates the student athletics among about 1,100 schools in the United States and one in Canada. It also organizes the athletic programs of the colleges and helps over 500,000 college student athletes who compete annually in college sports. The headquarters is located in Indianapolis, Indiana (US).

Football Playing Surface

‘OKLAHOMA STATE’ further stated that for January’s game in Stillwater the rink will be installed running East-to-West on top of the football playing surface.

‘Buckle Up’

Added Colleen Harvey, President-cum-Head Honcho, Oklahoma State Hockey, “As the great T. Boone Pickens (American business magnate and financier) once said, ‘I have always believed that it’s important to show a new look periodically. Predictability can lead to failure,’ so all I can say is get ready and buckle up.” In addition to the game, the rink will be available for the public to skate in the days leading up to the game. Concert Event

It’s not the first time that the Boone Pickens Stadium has been reimagined for purposes other than football. The venue made history by hosting the sold-out, four-day Boys from Oklahoma (country-rock song) concert event headlined by the Cross Canadian Ragweed (an American alt-country and rock band formed in Yukon, Oklahoma) and the Turnpike Troubadours (American country music band) in the spring of 2025. Those same bands returned along with Wyatt Flores (American country music singer-songwriter-musician) and others in the spring of 2026.

‘Unique Event’

Concluded Weiberg, “It’s great to see this unique and exciting event in the Boone Pickens Stadium. I suspect this will be the first hockey match for many and certainly the first hockey match inside a stadium for most. It will be a memorable event that fans won’t want to miss.”
