New stadium in Osnabrueck update October 2026 Image: VFL Osnabrueck

An information event was held recently in which the club members and the season ticket holders were apprised of the present planning status for the renovation of the Bremer Brücke Stadium in Osnabrück, Germany.

Once the rejig exercise gets nod the pristine sheen of the stadium will be retained and its “rough” look will remain intact.

‘vfl.de’ stated that 11 weeks following the official start of the planning phase Jan Jansen and Dr. Michael Welling, Managing Directors of the stadium company, together with the General Planner PPP architects + general planners, presented the initial results of the above project of huge magnitude. Lead consultant is architect Harald Fux from the firm Raum+ in Vienna.

The Bremer Brücke Stadium is a football stadium in the Schinkel district of Osnabrück, Germany. It is used mostly for football matches and is the home stadium of the 3. Liga team VfL Osnabrück. The stadium currently holds 16,100 people and opened in 1933.

The VfL Osnabrück is a German multisport club in Osnabrück, Lower Saxony (Germany). It currently fields teams in basketball, gymnastics, swimming, table tennis, and tennis but is by far best known for its football section. The football team currently plays in the 3. Liga following their relegation from the 2023-2024 2. Liga

Emphasized Nils Dethelfs of ppp, “Our goal is to present a plan that is ready for approval by the beginning of 2026. Given the tight timeframe we are working at jet set speed.”

‘vfl.de’ further stated that the 400 VfL fans who attended the information summit found the whole outcome to be extremely positive.

One fan stated about the planners and the architects, “They have engaged with the VfL and the legendary Bremer Brücke Stadium very well.”

Clear Guidelines

The designs presented reflect the current planning status. Both the planners and the VfL stressed that changes may still occur as the entire exercise progresses. The task on hand is challenging: The Bremer Brücke is an inner-City stadium located in the heart of a residential area – and the renovation is being carried out within a tight budget (€67.7 million) and the pristine sheen of the Bremer Brücke Stadium will have to remain intact.

Preserving Heritage

The main objective is to keep the original heritage of the stadium intact. The striking pylon structure will be retained – as will, as of now, the four floodlight masts in the corners of the facility which has shaped the appearance of the Bremer Brücke Stadium for decades. The “rough” look of the venue will also be retained. The architects have adopted the 60-degree corners provided for in the existing development plan – exactly the angle reflected in the VfL rhomboid.

Grandstand Concept: Tradition Meets Modernity

The current form of the North Stand will be retained while the remaining three stands will be completely renovated. The West stand will house the changing rooms and the media zone will come up in the ground floor with the seating and standing areas for the home and the away fans above – including the accessible seats which will generally be located in the protected areas on several stands.

The South Stand will be primarily designed as a business area with Boxes enhanced by small terraces outside the stadium. The functional rooms for the newsmen, the information technology (IT) personnel and the security staff will sit at the top level.

The East Curve will boast a roof terrace or promenade as a special access point. The stands will be filled from above eliminating the need for the entrances in the central area thus creating a closed and atmospheric curve structure.

Capacity, Utilization and Outlook

The renovated stadium could accommodate approximately 17,500 spectators in the future (currently 15,741). The exact capacity can be adjusted slightly in both directions over time. Also, under consideration as part of the modernization of the Bremer Brücke is the possibility of opening it up to the public as a meeting place.

Next Steps

Construction could start as early as after the 2025-2026 seasons provided the Osnabrück City Council greenlights the renovation in early November. This decision will form the basis for further planning work. The specific construction sequence for the individual sections will then be determined in collaboration with the General Contractor.
