Cagliari nudge out Palermo in Italy EURO bid

The Sardinian City of Cagliari edged out the Sicilian capital Palermo (both in Italy) on the Italian soccer federation’s list of 10 proposed Host Cities for the 2032 European Championship.

‘AP’ stated that the federation submitted its formal dossier to the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) recently with Milan, Turin, Verona, Genoa, Bologna, Florence, Rome, Naples, Bari, and Cagliari as the proposed Host Cities.

Palermo was listed as an alternate host, with the federation preferring to include only one island City to make logistics easier.

The Italian Football Federation, known colloquially as the Federcalcio, is the governing body of football in Italy. It is based in Rome and the Technical Department is in Coverciano, Florence. It organizes the Italian football league and Coppa Italia.

Coppa Italia is the annual domestic cup of Italian football. The knockout competition was organized by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) until the 2009-2010 seasons and by Lega Serie A ever since.

The Serie A, also called Serie A TIM for national sponsorship with TIM, is a professional league competition for football clubs located at the top of the Italian football league system and the winner is awarded the Scudetto and the Coppa Campioni d’Italia.

The Scudetto is a decoration having the colors of the flag of Italy which is sewn onto the jersey of the Italian sports clubs that won the highest level championship of their respective sport in the previous season.

The Coppa Campioni d’Italia is the trophy that in Italian football represents the victory of the Serie A championship.

Nyon (Switzerland)-based the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) is one of six continental bodies of governance in association football. It governs football, futsal and beach football in Europe and the transcontinental countries of Turkey, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Russia, and Kazakhstan, as well as some Asian countries such as Israel, Cyprus and Armenia. The UEFA consists of 55 national association members. Because of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, the FIFA and UEFA has suspended all Russian national teams and clubs from any FIFA and UEFA competitions.

The 2032 UEFA European Football Championship, commonly referred to as UEFA EURO 2032 or simply EURO 2032, will be the 19^th UEFA European Championship, the quadrennial international football championship organized by the UEFA for the senior men’s national teams of its member-associations.

‘AP’ further stated that the UEFA will decide the 2032 host on October 10^th, with Turkey the only other candidate.

Italy won the EUROS as host in 1968 and also organized the 1980 edition won by West Germany (read Federal Republic of Germany) – plus four games of EURO 2020.

The Azzurri (the Italy national football team) are the reigning European champion after winning EURO 2020 for their second continental title.

The last major soccer tournament held entirely in Italy was the 1990 World Cup and many of the country’s stadiums have not been renovated for more than three decades.

The UEFA will also decide the host for the 2028 EUROS in October.

The 2028 UEFA European Football Championship, commonly referred to as UEFA EURO 2028 or simply EURO 2028, will be the 18^th UEFA European Championship, the quadrennial international football championship organized by the UEFA for the senior men’s national teams of its member-associations.

There is a joint United Kingdom-Ireland bid for 2028, while Turkey is bidding for either 2028 or 2032, with Italy focused solely on 2032.

Russia had previously announced a declaration of interest for 2028 or 2032 but has since been removed from the process because of the war in Ukraine.
