A joint venture of the local contractors – the Travaux Généraux de Construction de Casablanca (TGCC) and the Société Générale des Travaux du Maroc (SGTM) – has been awarded the $320m contract for the next stage of construction works for the Grand Stade Hassan II Stadium in Casablanca (Morocco) which will serve as one of the venues for the 2030 FIFA World Cup™ tournament.

‘MEED’ stated that the two contractors submitted the only offer ahead of the tender deadline on June 10th.

Casablanca (Morocco)-based the Travaux Généraux de Construction de Casablanca (TGCC) is a leading Moroccan construction and public works company. It’s a major player in the Moroccan market specializing in building development and infrastructure projects.

Casablanca (Morocco)-based the Société Générale des Travaux du Maroc (SGTM ), founded in 1971 by the brothers Ahmed and Mohamed Kabbaj, is a company specializing in construction and public works . In 2017, it achieved a turnover of 4 billion dirhams.

The Grand Stade Hassan II Stadium is a planned football stadium to be built in Benslimane, just East of Casablanca (Morocco). Once completed in 2028 it will be used mostly for football matches and will serve as the home of the Morocco national football team. The stadium is planned to have a capacity of 115,000 spectators making it the largest football stadium in the world.

The 2030 FIFA World Cup™ will be the 24th FIFA World Cup™, a quadrennial international football tournament contested by the Men’s national teams of the member associations of FIFA. Three countries will host the competition representing, for the first time ever, two continents with Morocco, Portugal, and Spain as the host nations. Moreover, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the FIFA World Cup™ representatives of yet another continent – Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay – will each host one game the latter of which hosted the first World Cup in 1930. It will be held from June 8th-July 21st.

‘MEED’ further stated that the contract duration will be 30 months from the start of construction.

The SGTM won a $35m contract last year to undertake the early works.

The stadium is being built on a 100-hectare site in the El-Mansouria area of Benslimane Province, 38 kilometers North of Casablanca.

In March last year Morocco had appointed the architectural firm Populous and France’s Oualalou+Choi to design the stadium.

Populous is a global architectural and design practice with regional headquarters in Kansas City (US), London (UK) and Brisbane (Australia) specializing in sports facilities, arenas and convention centers as well as in the planning and design of major special events.

The construction works are expected to be completed by 2028.

The State-owned fund Caisse de Dépôt et de Gestion (CDG) signed a deal worth about $500m to finance the stadium’s construction.

The Caisse de Dépôt et de Gestion (CDG) is a State-owned financial institution in Morocco established in 1959. It acts as a long-term investor managing the public retirement schemes and regulated savings while also driving socioeconomic growth through strategic investments. The CDG plays a vital role in Morocco’s economy by managing the pension funds, collecting and securing the savings and investing in the key national projects.

Six other stadiums will be renovated in the Cities of Agadir, Casablanca, Fez, Marrakech, Rabat, and Tangier to host the African Cup of Nations in 2025 and the 2030 FIFA World Cup™.

The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, also referred to as AFCON 2025 or CAN 2025, is scheduled to be the 35th edition of the biennial African football tournament organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). It will be hosted by Morocco for the second time and the first since 1988. It will be held from December 21st, 2025-January 18th, 2026.

6th of October City (Egypt)-based the Confederation of African Football (CAF) is the administrative and controlling body for association football, beach soccer and futsal in Africa. It was established on February 8th, 1957 at the Grand Hotel in Khartoum, Sudan.

Morocco will be the second African country to host the World Cup after South Africa in 2010. It is hosting the tournament jointly with Spain and Portugal.
