Update on Morocco’s new masterpiece Image: Populous and Oualalou + Choi

Morocco has kicked off the construction tender for the Grand Stade Hassan II in Benslimane province Casablanca, with the aim of making it the world’s largest stadium.

Morocco World News said that this new stage involves major structural elements including masonry, waterproofing, metal framework, coverings, false ceilings, carpentry, and painting.

The second phase of the project, with an estimated cost of $320 million, follows the nearly completed earthworks phase.

The 115,000 capacity Grande Stade Hassan II stadium has been designed by Paris-based architects Oualalou + Choi and global sports design leaders Populous.

The design draws inspiration from the traditional social gathering of Morocco known as a ‘moussem’, with the stadium structure set under a grand tented roof that emerges as a dramatic intervention in the forested landscape.

Scheduled to be completed in 2028, the venue will be used mostly for football matches and will serve as the home of the Morocco national football team. The venue is being planned keeping in mind the 2030 FIFA World Cup™.

The primary objective is to accommodate the finale of the world’s premier sporting spectacle. Morocco will co-host the tournament with Spain and Portugal.

Morocco’s National Agency for Public Equipment (ANEP) is supervising the project as the delegated project manager for the National Company for the Implementation and Management of Sports Equipment (SONARGES).

The tender submission deadline has been set for June 10. Work is expected to take 30 months from the date specified in the service order, which must be issued within 30 days following contract approval.

This timeline aligns with statements from Fouzi Lekjaa, president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, who projected completion by December 2027 in preparation for the 2030 World Cup, which

The first phase of the project, involving earthworks, was awarded to SGTM for $35.6 million and is now nearly complete, allowing for the core construction to begin.

At both ends of the colossal stadium bowl in the Grand Stade Hassan II, three steep, compact tiers ensure a vibrant and spectacular atmosphere. Each ‘end’ of the stadium holds 29,500 general admission spectators.

Five levels of hospitality along each of the main stands at the side of the pitch welcome 12,000 VVIP, VIP, Hospitality and Box users, in addition to the Royal box.

The stadium is covered by a spectacular roof made from a unique aluminium lattice. Supporting the geometry of the roof and the bowl is a ring of 32 stairways, creating monumental gateways that feature lush gardens positioned on raised platforms, each 28 meters from the ground.

The stadium, located 38 kilometers northeast of Casablanca in the Beni Amer forest area of El Mansouria, will be part of a 100-hectare complex including training fields, a hotel, conference center, athletics stadium, sports hall, gymnasium, swimming pool, play area, two shopping centers, and four parking lots accommodating 10,463 vehicles.
