Construction work on a China-funded national stadium in Phnom Penh, capital of Cambodia, has been completed despite innumerable roadblocks put up due to COVID-19. This information was given by the Cambodian Minister of Tourism, Thong Khon, recently.

The new stadium at Phnom Penh in Cambodia – the Morodok Techo National Stadium – is one of Asia’s largest stadia.

The ‘Xinhua News Agency’ quoted Khon, who is also the President of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia, as stating that the 60,000-seat stadium will serve as the main venue for tournaments when Cambodia hosts the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in 2023.

The 2023 Southeast Asian Games, commonly known as the 32nd Southeast Asian Games or 32nd SEA Games, will be the 32nd edition of the Southeast Asian Games, a biennial sports multisport event which will be held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. It is slated to start on May 5th, 2023, and will end on May 16th, 2023.

Averred Khon, “The stadium is a great achievement for Cambodia’s sporting sector, and best personifies the deep friendship between Cambodia and China. The stadium is the biggest gift that the Government and the people of China have given to the Government and people of Cambodia. It truly demonstrates the great friendship which the people as well as the Governments of both the countries enjoy.”

Developed by the China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC) under China’s grant aid, the construction work on the project started in August 2017. The stadium has been built in the shape of a ‘sailing ship’ and both its prows are 99 meters tall, and it has been encircled by an ancient Angkor-style moat.

Khon informed that the stadium enjoys added attractions like hotels, sportswear shops, equipment shops, and other facilities.
