The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, laid the foundation stone of an international cricket stadium in Varanasi (India) recently.

‘INDIA TODAY’ stated that this will be Uttar Pradesh’s (State in India) third international cricket stadium after Kanpur and Lucknow.

‘INDIA TODAY’ further quoted Modi as stating while addressing the gathering, “The foundation stone for an international cricket stadium in Varanasi has been laid. This is going to be a blessing for the youth of Purvanchal (a proposed State in Eastern Uttar Pradesh). The whole world is getting connected with India through cricket. New countries are now coming forward to play cricket. This stadium in the City of ‘Mahadev’ (Hindu God Lord Shiva) will be dedicated to ‘Mahadev’ himself. The sportspersons here will benefit from the construction of an international stadium in Kashi. This stadium will become the star of the Purvanchal region. The success India is witnessing in sports is evidence of the change in outlook towards sports. The Government is helping sportspersons at every level.”

Varanasi Stadium Features:

  • Varanasi’s international cricket stadium will be built on a Rs 121 crore land;
  • An approximate Rs 330 crore will be spent on the construction of the cricket stadium, the Uttar Pradesh Government informed;
  • The stadium will accommodate nearly 30,000 people at a time;
  • The roof covers will be crescent-shaped, floodlights shaped like a trident, patterns resembling bel leaves, and one of the structures shaped like a ‘damru’;
  • The design of the international cricket stadium in Varanasi will depict the “essence of Kashi” (the spiritual name of the Northern Indian City of Varanasi); and
  • The spectators’ gallery of the stadium will resemble the steps of the ghats (steps) of Varanasi.

The stadium is likely to be ready by December 2025.
