The Government of Karnataka (India) and the Karnataka Housing Board (KHB) has proposed for a new world-class international cricket stadium and sports complex at Suryanagar Phase-4, Bengaluru.

‘collage design’ stated that the proposed 80,000-capacity international cricket stadium will mark a defining step in India’s next generation of world-class sporting infrastructure.

To fulfill the need of housing in the State of Karnataka (India) the Karnataka Housing Board (KHB) was established in 1962 as a successor to the Mysore (City in the State of Karnataka) Housing Board. The Board endeavors to provide affordable housing to the people in the State and improve the quality of life by providing state-of-the-art amenities.

‘collage design’ further stated that Collage Design, as the Project Architects and Masterplanners, along with the KHB have planned the Surya Sports Village to become a key venue for major international cricket tournaments, the International Cricket Council (ICC) events and the Indian Premier League (IPL) events fully compliant with the global standards and positioned to establish Bengaluru (capital city of the Indian State of Karnataka) as a leading destination in the international cricketing landscape.

Dubai (UAE)-based the International Cricket Council (ICC) is the global governing body for cricket. Representing 106 members the ICC governs and administrates the game and is responsible for the staging of major international tournaments including the ICC Men’s World Cup and Women’s World Cup and the ICC Men’s and Women’s T20 World Cups as well as all associated qualifying events.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a professional Twenty20 (T20) cricket league in India organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Founded in 2007, it features 10 City-based franchise teams. The IPL is the most popular and richest cricket league in the world and the 11th richest sporting league in the world by revenue.

Strategically located in Indlawadi, Anekal Taluk, adjoining the development momentum of Suryanagar Phase 4, the sports precinct will be positioned within one of Bengaluru’s fastest emerging growth corridors with strong connectivity via NH-44 and in close proximity to Electronic City, Bommasandra, Jigani Industrial Area and the upcoming Metro networks. The site capitalizes on its 75-acre Greenfield Canvas enabling holistic master planning that balances the elite sports infrastructure with the vibrant public spaces, the urban plazas, the landscape, and the future-ready infrastructure.

Collage Design has been working closely with the multiple stakeholders in the State to ensure every aspect of technical and operational compliance for hosting national and international sporting and entertainment events and has been integrated in the design to create a safe and sustainable stadium meeting global standards.

At its core, the 80,000-capacity international cricket stadium is designed to meet the global standards for international matches including IPL, the large format tournaments and the televised competitions. The stadium architecture prioritizes spectator experience, viewing quality, accessibility, and operational excellence supported by comprehensive Players and Match Officials (PMOA) facilities, world-class media and broadcast infrastructure, the VIP lounges, the corporate Boxes, the hospitality suites, the extensive spectator concourses, safety planning and elite player environments. The Bowl geometry, seating distribution, sightline planning, circulation zoning, and lighting performance have been benchmarked against the leading international stadiums positioning the venue as a next generation cricket stadium for India. The process for selection of contractor has been initiated and the project is scheduled to commence construction by June 2026.

Beyond cricket, the precinct reinforces Bengaluru’s identity as a multisport powerhouse. A fully equipped indoor sports arena, athletics facilities, outdoor sports fields, and a state-of-the-art high-performance center together integrate Sports Science, training, fitness, recovery, and athlete development supporting both elite performance and grassroots participation. The aquatics center, developed to FINA (WA) standards, adds another international class sporting venue enabling competitions, advanced training and wider public engagement complementing the overall sports ecosystem.

The World Aquatics, formerly known as the FINA, is the international federation recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for administering international competitions in water sports. It is one of several international federations which administer a given sport or discipline for both the IOC and the international community. It is based in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is the international, non-Governmental, sports governing body of the modern Olympic Games. Founded in 1894 by Pierre de Coubertin and Demetrios Vikelas it is based in Lausanne, Switzerland.

A key differentiator of the project is its urban place making intent. This is not conceived as a stadium alone but as a living district that remains active beyond matchdays. The pedestrian-friendly spectator plazas, event streets, retail, and food and beverage (F&B) avenues, cultural and leisure spaces and convention infrastructure position the development as a regional civic and lifestyle destination.

A defining feature of the complex is the provision of integrated accommodation facilities that support the athletes, the officials and the event operations. The development incorporates athlete residences, dormitory housing and guest accommodation, enabling seamless onsite living, preparation, and recovery. This well-planned residential ecosystem strengthens operational efficiency, reduces travel dependency and reinforces the complex as a complete, high-performance sports destination capable of hosting extended international events and training programs The façade concept draws from Karnataka’s vibrant cultural identity inspired by the expressive Yakshagana (Indian folk art) headgear whose bold colors, layered detailing and radiating patterns translate into dynamic architectural fins across the façade forming a powerful and culturally rooted visual language. As the stadium is located in Suryanagar the design symbolically integrates the idea of Surya (the Sun) with the semi-circular crown-like façade form representing the Sun and the radiating fins echoing the Sun rays, embodying energy, celebration, and identity. These architectural bands are further enhanced through dynamic programmable lighting capable of synchronizing with audio, visual content and key sporting moments to create immersive, animated lighting experiences reinforcing the stadium as a vibrant, living landmark for Bengaluru.

The sweeping roof canopy integrates seamlessly with the façade enhancing the shading performance while the ring lighting and the façade illumination will bring the structure to life during the evening events transforming it into a luminous civic icon.

Averred Amol Mahajan, Director, Collage Design, “The international cricket stadium and sports complex stand as a visionary development that goes beyond being just a sports venue. It is designed to inspire the athletes, engage the communities and attract the major global sporting events. The project will stimulate the urban growth, strengthen Bengaluru’s international sporting identity and enhance the public experience. With its ambition, scale and architectural excellence it aims to create a powerful and enduring legacy for Karnataka.”
