Empower Field at Mile High (US) will stage the University of Colorado’s (CU) home football game against Texas A&M University on September 11th, 2021. An announcement in this regard was made recently.

‘Denver Broncos’ stated that since the building opened in 2001, Empower Field at Mile High has staged 17 Division I college football games – all of which previously involved Colorado and Colorado State University in the Rocky Mountain Showdown. The matchup to be held on September 11th will mark the first time a team from the Southeastern Conference has played in the venue.

The 76,125-capacity Empower Field at Mile High is an American football stadium in Denver, Colorado (US). The stadium is nicknamed Mile High due to the City’s elevation of 5,280 feet. The primary tenant is the Denver Broncos of the National Football League (NFL). It opened in 2001 to replace the Broncos’ original home, the old Mile High Stadium.

The Denver Broncos are a professional American football franchise based in Denver (US). The Broncos compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the League’s American Football Conference West division.

The University of Colorado is a public research university in Boulder, Colorado (US). It is the flagship varsity of the University of Colorado system, and was founded in 1876, five months before Colorado became a State.

The Texas A&M University is a public land-grant research university in College Station, Texas. It was founded in 1876 and became the flagship institution of the Texas A&M University System in 1948. As of 2020, Texas A&M’s student body is the second largest in the United States.

The Rocky Mountain Showdown is the name given to the Colorado-Colorado State football rivalry. It is an American college football rivalry between the Colorado Buffaloes football team of the University of Colorado and Colorado State Rams football team of Colorado State University.

‘Denver Broncos’ quoted Jon Applegate, Director of Events and Booking, Denver Broncos, as commenting, “We are very appreciative of Rick George and the staff at the University of Colorado for the opportunity to once again host college football at Empower Field at Mile High. Our stadium has become a top destination for sporting events, and we look forward to hosting two premier college football programs in our building in September.”

Game statistics

As per the University of Colorado (CU), the Buffaloes enjoy a long history of playing games in Denver – non-conference as well as league contests – dating back to when Stanford University (private university in California) visited in 1904 with the game played at the long-since demolished Broadway Park (6th Avenue & Broadway). When CU was a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, it played rival Colorado Mines 14 times in Denver, many on Thanksgiving Day. The last of those games was in 1922, and it would be 66 years before the ‘Buffs’ played a neutral site game there again, the first of 19 against Colorado State.

Colorado is 54-35-3 overall in games played in Denver, 26-11-1 against teams from other Cities or States and 28-24-2 versus schools or teams based in the City. The bulk of the games have come against the University of Denver (17-12-2), Colorado State University (13-6), the Denver Athletic Club (3-12) and Colorado Mines (9-4-1).

The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, commonly known as the Rocky Mountain Conference from approximately 1910 through the late 1960s, is a collegiate athletic conference which operates in the Western United States, mostly in Colorado with members in Nebraska, New Mexico, South Dakota, and Utah.
