Doha’s Al Khor complex to get $30mn facelift

Barwa Real Estate Group awarded the contract for the expansion of Al Khor Workers Sports Complex in Doha, Qatar, to Al Bader Constructions and Steel works, Doha-based Qatar Tribune reported. The $30-million project is scheduled to be completed in 18 months’ time.

The project’s expansion plan comes after the success in meeting the needs of the labour sector. The project aims at improving the quality of life of the blue collared workers by providing better living conditions as well as recreational facilities for them. Several companies involved in long-term projects have moved their workers to the Al Khor’s residential area.

This new phase of expansion will include a shopping centre, 512 one and two bedroom apartments in addition to an 8,000 sqm hypermarket and a 300 sqm multi-purpose hall. Infrastructure work involving construction of electricity substation, internal roads, water and electricity, sewage and irrigation, communications, surveillance, parking lots, pump rooms, fire safety and gas will also be part of it.

The Al Khor Workers Sports complex already boasts of four cricket fields, four football fields, three volleyball courts, four basketball courts and four kabbadi fields according to Barwa Real Estate website. It also includes a supermarket, 35 shops, 2 open-air cinemas, a mosque, plaza area and other facilities. The complex is used to host various events and sports activities by government and private corporations. The Ministry of Interior and Barwa group in collaboration also organize yearly programs for the workers. The number of visitors for all the events exceeded 500,000 in the year 2016.
