An application has been lodged proposing the creation of a new hotel and stand at the Warwickshire Country Cricket Club’s home pitch – the Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham, England (UK) – representing the next stage in the ongoing redevelopment of the site.

‘insidermedia’ stated that the hotel is the centerpiece of a project that includes the redevelopment of the stadium’s Raglan and Family Stands, incorporating a new concourse with enhanced food and drink options and improved facilities for the disabled spectators.

The Warwickshire County Cricket Club is one of 18 first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales (UK). It represents the historic county of Warwickshire.

The 25,000-capacity Edgbaston Cricket Ground – also known as the Edgbaston Stadium – in the Edgbaston area of Birmingham, England (UK) is home to the Warwickshire County Cricket Club and its T20 team – the Birmingham Bears.

‘insidermedia’ further stated that it would provide 146 bedrooms, including 85 with pitch-facing balconies, as well as a gym, ground floor coffee shop, and a restaurant and bar.

The initial stage of the development, brought forward by the Warwickshire Country Cricket Club, relates to the demolition of the Priory and Raglan Stands with a 3,191-seat replacement stand proposed.

It is expected that the project would generate approximately £4.3m of visitor spend every year and directly or indirectly create 65 jobs for people in the West Midlands. This is in addition to 160 roles during each year of construction.

A design and access statement read, “The existing stands are coming towards the end of their designed lifespan creating an opportunity to build something truly special at Edgbaston. The proposed new stand will include a new concourse with enhanced food and drink options plus improved facilities for the disabled spectators. The new four-star hotel will be a unique feature to the site providing one-of-a-kind pitchside spectator and hospitality facilities as well as a roof terrace that provides views of the Birmingham skyline. In providing a new hotel for the spectators and the visitors to the area the proposal hopes to bring new jobs and opportunities to the area. The proposal aims to continue the master plan vision. In delivering a new premium hotel alongside hotel, leisure and accessible spectator facilities the development will continue to raise the standard the wider Edgbaston Master Plan creating a vibrant economic center around the stadium and delivering lasting investment for the local community.”

Radisson (a multibrand hotel chain) was confirmed as the Edgbaston Stadium’s hotel partner earlier this year.
