Penn State Beaver Stadium renovation Image: Populous

The Penn State University plans to renovate the Beaver Stadium in Pennsylvania, US, home to the football team Penn State Nittany Lions football, and the university will be looking to fans to help foot the bill.

‘radio.wpsu.org’ stated that speaking during the university’s Board of trustees meeting held recently, the President of the Pennsylvania State University Neeli Bendapudi gave little information about the project, other than to say that after review, the university has decided to renovate the Beaver Stadium, rather than build new.

The Penn State is a top-ranked research university and Pennsylvania’s (US) sole land-grant institution, founded with a mission of high-quality teaching, expert research and global service.

The 106,572-capacity Beaver Stadium is an outdoor college football stadium on the campus of Pennsylvania State University in University Park, Pennsylvania (US). It has been home to the Penn State Nittany Lions of the Big Ten Conference since 1960, though some parts of the stadium date back to 1909.

The Penn State Nittany Lions team represents the Pennsylvania State University in college football. The Nittany Lions compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) as a member of the Big Ten Conference, which they joined in 1993 after playing as an Independent from 1892 to 1992.

Stated Bendapudi, “I know there will be many questions, but candidly, all we are at this point is to say we’ve decided we will renovate, not build new. There’s not much else to add.”

‘radio.wpsu.org’ further stated that the announcement comes as the university is dealing with a budget shortfall. Renovating would be more economical, according to the university’s announcement.

Bendapudi noted that Athletics is “self-sustaining” financially.

She added, “So, no tuition, no student fees. None of the educational budget funds will be used for this project.”

Instead, they’ll be looking to other sources.

Bendapudi further stated, “Certainly we hope to count on our dedicated and loyal fans to pitch in with philanthropy to help us make this a reality.”

According to the university, the project would happen in multiple phases and could mean that the Beaver Stadium gets used “beyond football game days”.

Bendapudi said the project will have to go to the board for review and a vote.
