The Arena Thun Cooperative is requesting its members to approve the takeover of the Stockhorn Arena in Thun, Switzerland – home of the FC Thun – by the multiline insurer Visana.

‘FC THUN’ stated that the takeover by Visana of the venue would ensure the long-term financial security of FC Thun’s home ground – the Stockhorn Arena.

The FC Thun is a Swiss football team from the Bernese Oberland town of Thun (Switzerland). The club plays in the Swiss Super League from the 2025-2026 seasons, the top tier of the Swiss football league system, following promotion from the Swiss Challenge League (the second highest tier of the Swiss football league system) in the 2024-2025 seasons.

The Stockhorn Arena (formerly known as the Arena Thun) is a football stadium in Thun, Switzerland. It has a capacity to hold 10,000 spectators and opened in 2011. It is the home of the FC Thun of the Swiss Super League.

Bern (Switzerland)-based the Visana Group is a major Swiss health and accident insurance company. It offers a wide range of insurance products including compulsory health insurance (OKP), supplementary health insurance, non-life insurance, and accident insurance. They serve both individual and corporate clients offering services like wage loss and accident insurance for businesses.

‘FC THUN’ further stated that Visana has agreed to waive the rent for the arena and retains the naming rights to the stadium. In addition, Visana is committed to paying CHF 300,000 annually to FC Thun’s youth and women’s development program until 2036.

Following promotion to the Super League more good news follows for the FC Thun and its fans across Switzerland: Visana is ready to expand its long-term partnership with the storied club. In addition, the FC Thun’s youth and women’s development programs will receive additional funding for 10 years.

Long-term Security

The Arena Thun Cooperative is planning to propose to its Members at their meeting to be held on June 17th, 2025 that the Members transfer their shares in the Stockhorn Arena at a 1:1 ratio to Visana corresponding to a purchase price of CHF 1 million. The agreement also includes Visana waiving FC Thun’s stadium rent and retaining the stadium’s naming rights. Furthermore, the new owner commits to making an annual contribution of CHF 300,000 to the FC Thun’s youth and women’s development program for 10 years.

For the President of the Arena Thun Cooperative Christian Fröhlich the Visana deal will hold the club in good stead – “We are handing over the arena to a long-term, reliable partner who cares as much about FC Thun as we do. At the same time we are contributing to the financial health of our club and to the development of the youth and women.”

Positive Picture

The FC Thun sent out a statement which read, “Stable conditions and long-term prospects are central to FC Thun’s sporting success. Both can be achieved through the increased commitment of Visana which is set to become the owner of the Stockhorn Arena and plans to invest a total of CHF 3 million in youth and women’s development over 10 years. The planned change of ownership is positive news for the FC Thun and its many fans. The planned change of ownership also means that the FC Thun will no longer have to pay the stadium rent. Revenue from ticket sales, catering, or event rentals will remain with the FC Thun. This creates financial flexibility for the club’s further development on and off the pitch. As part of the agreement Visana will also own the naming rights of the stadium. The FC Thun is pleased about this collaboration with Visana which will translate to sustainable strengthening of the club and long-term security of its home stadium.”
