Philippines planning a new arena Image: CIAC Clark Intl. Airport Corporation (Facebook)

The officials of the Clark International Airport Corporation (CIAC) in Pampanga, Philippines, the developer of the Clark Civil Aviation Complex, announced on July 12th that it is planning to build a stadium in New Clark City – primarily a music venue – to host the concerts of top-notch artistes like Taylor Swift (American singer-songwriter).

The CIAC officials informed that the planned facility will be so designed to attract major music acts by the likes of Taylor Swift and other legendary pop singers.

‘philstarGLOBAL’ stated that the CIAC President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Arrey Perez said that the proposed entertainment and events center will be constructed within “walking distance” from the Clark International Airport (CRK) in Pampanga (Philippines) to help boost the traffic in CRK.

Perez was speaking on the sidelines of the ‘Build Better More’ Infrastructure Forum which was held at the New Clark City in Tarlac, Philippines, on July 12th.

The Clark International Airport Corporation (CIAC) is a non-chartered Government-Owned and Controlled Corporation (GOCC) duly registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission. It was created primarily to develop, operate, manage, and maintain the Clark Civil Aviation Complex within the Clark Freeport Zone (an area in Central Luzon, Philippines) in the province of Pampanga.

Manila (Philippines)-based the Securities and Exchange Commission is the agency of the Government of the Philippines charged with the registration and supervision of the corporations and securities as well as the capital market institutions and participants in the Philippines.

The Clark Civil Aviation Complex, located within the Clark Freeport Zone in Pampanga (Philippines), the biggest American military base outside the United States, covers an area of approximately 2,367 hectares with a 3,200-meter long runway and associated taxiways, aircraft parking apron, a passenger terminal building, and related facilities.

The Clark International Airport is an international airport covering portions of the Cities of Angeles and Mabalacat within the Clark Freeport and Special Economic Zone in the province of Pampanga, Philippines.

‘philstarGLOBAL’ further stated that Perez said that the planned facility, slated to be completed by 2028, will spread over close to 40 hectares of land and will cost around P32 billion. The goal is – a major act by Taylor Swift in 2028.

Perez said the CIAC started conceptualizing the stadium project in October last year and began speaking with the local and the international developers in November 2023. He said that the planned venue is part of a greater objective to have more added attractions in Clark.

Pointed out Perez, “The major acts are always held in the Philippine Arena in Santa Maria). Though it is a 55,000-seater venue but the problem is it causes a lot of snarled-up traffic. It’s a major gateway… NLEX (North Luzon Expressway). And apart from that, Clark is in need of added attractions and the venue will act as a fillip for air traffic expansion as well as increase in passenger traffic and hosting of major events and music showpieces thus boosting the tourism quotient.”

He added, “Our objective is to ensure that the airport passenger traffic increases and the planned arena will prove to be a perfect catalyst for the airport to grow as well as an added attraction on the skyline of New Clark City which is undergoing development.”

The CIAC is the developer of the Clark Civil Aviation Complex which is spread across 2,367 hectares and also oversees the functions of the Clark International Airport.

Perez informed that so far a mix of local and international companies from Singapore, United States and the Philippines have evinced keen interest in the proposed Clark arena project – “Few of these companies are planning to join forces. The venue project is going to be in the public-private partnership (PPP) format. The venue will spread across 40 hectares of land and the price tag will stand at more than P30 billion. We will really need the private players to start work on the planned development.”

On July 11th, the officials and members of the Clark Technical Working Group led by the Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco met Perez “to discuss the strategies and foster greater collaboration among the Government agencies and the private stakeholders to push for greater awareness and promotion” of CRK as a major gateway to tourism and exploring Philippines.

Perez further informed that they will try to court Taylor Swift for the Clark venue’s inaugural concert. However, presently she is only allowed to hold concert in Singapore when it comes to the South East Asia Region. Singapore entered into an exclusive deal to host the South East Asian leg of the American singer-songwriter’s ‘The Eras Tour’ making it the sole South East Asia stop – “I hope by the time our venue is complete we will be able to host Taylor Swift because Philippines is known to be full of music buffs. Whenever any international concert is held here it is a runaway success and with the airport near to the venue it will be a two-way traffic – benefiting both the planned arena as well as the airport with the former landing major concerts and events and fans’ flow and the latter benefiting from passenger traffic.”

The Eras Tour is the ongoing sixth concert tour by the American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift. It commenced on March 17th, 2023, in Glendale, Arizona, United States, and is set to conclude on December 8th, 2024, in Vancouver, Canada, consisting of 152 shows spanning five continents.
