HSV-Sparda-Bank Hamburg ‘share’d commitment

The holding company Kühne Holding AG of Switzerland have sold around 7.5 percent of their shares in HSV Fußball AG & Co. KGaA (the operating company that manages the Bundesliga team Hamburger Sport-Verein e.V. [HSV]) to the cooperative Sparda-Bank Hamburg (a German cooperative bank).

‘hsv.de’ quoted the Board Member of HSV Eric Huwer as stating, “We’re pleased to take the next step with the Sparda-Bank Hamburg and welcome a reliable, locally rooted partner with strong HSV ties at the shareholder level.”

In return, the Kühne Holding AG has once again acquired the naming rights of the Volksparkstadion in Hamburg, Germany, home pitch of the HSV.

Schindellegi (Switzerland)-based the Kühne Holding AG is a holding company that consolidates the business interests of Klaus-Michael Kühne (a German billionaire businessman). It primarily holds a majority stake in Kuehne + Nagel International AG, a global logistics and transportation company.

Kuehne + Nagel International AG are a global transport and logistics company based in Schindellegi, Switzerland. Its main Owner and Operator is Klaus-Michael Kühne via his Kühne Holding and Kühne Foundation. The company was founded in 1890 in Bremen, Germany.

The Hamburger Sport-Verein e.V., commonly known as the Hamburger SV or Hamburg or HSV, is a football club based in Hamburg (Germany) which plays in the Bundesliga, the highest level of the German football league system.

The Volksparkstadion is a football stadium in Hamburg, Germany, with a capacity to hold 57,000 spectators which makes it the eighth-largest stadium in Germany. It has served as the home ground of the Bundesliga side Hamburger SV since 1953.

The Sparda-Bank Hamburg is a German cooperative bank focused on retail banking specifically serving customers within Hamburg.

‘hsv.de’ further stated that the HSV has consolidated its position by bringing the Sparda-Bank Hamburg eG on board as a new shareholder. The Sparda-Bank Hamburg, already an exclusive partner of HSV since 2023, has acquired around 7.5 percent of the shares in HSV Fußball AG & Co. KGaA from the Kühne Holding AG. The largest cooperative bank in Northern Germany has also expanded its partnership with the HSV and has extended its exclusive status with the Bundesliga club. The existing cooperation has been renewed until 2030.

Observed Eric Huwer, HSV Board Member, “This is another major step in our development. We’re pleased to take the next step with the Sparda-Bank Hamburg and welcome a reliable, locally rooted partner with strong HSV ties at the shareholder level.”

Stephan Liesegang, Chairman of Sparda-Bank Hamburg, who will also join the Supervisory Board of HSV Fußball AG & Co. KGaA, shared his excitement, “The HSV and the Sparda-Bank Hamburg share common values – from brand development and strong ties to the City of Hamburg to taking on social responsibility. We want to further strengthen this well-established partnership and acquiring these shares is a clear commitment to the HSV and to Hamburg.”
 

Naming Rights

With the sale of the shares the Sparda-Bank Hamburg has become the third-largest shareholder in HSV Fußball AG & Co. KGaA behind HSV e.V. and the Kühne Holding. The move reflects Klaus-Michael Kühne’s longstanding commitment to hand over smooth running of HSV’s football operations and its home show to reliable hands.

Despite the share sale the Kühne Holding are not stepping away from the HSV and instead have acquired the naming rights for the Volksparkstadion for the next three years.

Commented Klaus-Michael Kühne, “We want to bolster the HSV’s position in the Bundesliga table.”
