Hamburg (Germany) is firm on bringing the 2036, 2040 or the 2044 Olympic Games to the Hanseatic City (Hamburg) and is bidding alongside Berlin, Munich and North Rhine-Westphalia to host the greatest sporting show on the planet.

‘Sport Bild’ stated that the City presented its plans at an event held recently in the bunker near Heiligengeistfeld (tourist attraction in Hamburg, Germany). The requisite documents have already been submitted to the German Olympic Sports Confederation.

Frankfurt am Main (Germany)-based the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) was founded on May 20th, 2006. It represents 89,000 clubs and 27,000,000 members, about a third of the population of Germany.

‘Sport Bild’ further stated that not just the Olympic ambition but the Sports Senator Andy Grote (SPD – Social Democratic Party of Germany) announced that a new home will be built for the Bundesliga team Hamburger SV.

The Hamburger SV or HSV is a German sports club based in Hamburg, Germany. They play in the Bundesliga – the top professional football (soccer) league of Germany.

The Volksparkstadion is a football stadium in Hamburg, Germany, with a capacity to accommodate 57,000 spectators which makes it the eighth largest stadium in Germany. It has served as the home ground of the 2. Bundesliga team – the Hamburger SV – since 1953. The stadium opened its doors on July 12th, 1953.

Irrespective of the fact whether the Olympics take place or not the City definitely wants to build a new athletics arena next to the current Volksparkstadion which will then become the new home of the professional footballers!

Pointed out Peter Tschentscher (SPD), Hamburg Mayor, “It will become increasingly difficult in the coming years to make this now quite old Volksparkstadion suitable for competitions. Furthermore, Hamburg needs a multipurpose sports venue that can be used not only for football matches during weekends but also for major acts and concerts.”

The Volksparkstadion has existed in its current form since 2000. The facility can hold 57,000 spectators. The new arena will initially boast around 60,000 seats with the capacity to be expanded later to fit in up to 70,000 spectators.

Added Grote, “Anyway, the HSV will have to think about moving to a new stadium in the 2040s. The Volksparkstadion will be in dire need of renovation by then. We have held discussions with the HSV and we have a common perspective on this project. The days when a football match is held in an arena every two weeks – I believe that will eventually be over. The renovation costs in the 2040s will be almost equivalent to building a new stadium! And the major structural defects surfacing in the Volksparkstadion will remain even if the Olympics are not held.”

Informed Eric Huwer, HSV Board Member, “We will now discuss everything with our HSV family. One thing is clear: We will not be moving into a purely athletics stadium with a running track.”

Maintained Mayor Tschentscher, “After the Olympic Games the stadium can be converted into a multifunctional arena that will be at the disposal of the City. I assume that the HSV will discuss this with its committees.”

Grote hinted that the once the new facility get off the ground the Volksparkstadion – which is owned by the HSV – will be torn down as the City is not in a position to maintain two stadiums.
