Roig Arena signs sustainability partner Image: Iberdrola Espana

The Spanish multinational electric utility company Iberdrola España and the operators of the under-construction Roig Arena in Valencia, Spain, have signed a long-term agreement on the strength of which the former has become the ‘Sustainability Partner’ and the ‘Founding Partner’ of the basketball team Valencia Basket’s future home – the Roig Arena – which is all set to open its doors in September. This has been termed as the highest level of sponsorship deal.

‘Iberdrola España’ stated that as part of the above deal the Iberdrola España will supply renewable electricity to the whole of the Roig Arena.

The Iberdrola España is a Spanish multinational electric utility company based in Bilbao, Spain. It has around 40,000 employees and serves around 30 million customers.

The Valencia Basket Club S.A.D., commonly known as the Valencia Basket, is a professional basketball team based in Valencia, Spain. The team plays in the Liga ACB (the top professional basketball league in Spain) and the EuroLeague (the top-tier professional basketball club competition in Europe). They play their home games at the Pavelló Municipal Font de Sant Lluís.

The 15,600-capacity under-construction Roig Arena is a multipurpose indoor arena in Valencia, Spain, which is scheduled to open its doors in September. It is the dream venue project of the Spanish billionaire businessman Juan Roig who is the Owner of Valencia Basket.

‘Iberdrola España’ further stated that apart from supplying ‘Green Energy’ to the Roig Arena whose maximum capacity stands at 20,000 the Iberdrola España will also install a 1 MW photovoltaic (PV) plant and charging points for circa 40 electric vehicles in the parking area. The company also plans to initiate energy efficiency measures in the future.

The above agreement also incorporates the implementation of a joint corporate social responsibility (CSR) actions focused on reducing inequalities and decreasing disparities in various aspects of life and offering wealth of opportunities to the marginalized section of the society. The power major will also organize sustainable events.

Our objective is to create social, economic and environmental value for the people in the regions where we are present. We promise to offer all the Valencians a unique experience when they come-a-visiting the Roig Arena. We will accord the highest priority to the sustainability quotient and electrification of the economy (the process of replacing fossil fuel-based technologies with those powered by electricity, particularly electricity generated from the renewable sources).”

The venue will use 100 percent renewable energy, will boast a photovoltaic farm (made up of multiple solar panels arranged in an open space, often in a large area known as a solar farm) on its roof and will implement ambitious energy efficiency measures supporting the transition of the economy of Spain towards a decarbonized system.”
 

Economic Drivers

The Iberdrola España has provided a shot in the arm to the economy of the Valencia Region. In 2024 alone the company generated an economic impact of more than €970M in the region further consolidating its foothold as one of the main economic drivers of the autonomous community.

Last year, the company made purchases from more than 420 companies in the Valencian Community worth more than €190M and with a tax contribution of more than €390M it became one of the region’s highest taxpayers.
