Tennis Queensland announced on March 25th that funding for significant upgrades to the Queensland Tennis Centre (QTC) has been confirmed.

‘tennis’ stated that the funding will help ensure the QTC is ready to host the Olympic and Paralympic tennis events as part of the 2032 Brisbane Games providing a lasting legacy for sport in Queensland.

Earlier, it was reported that Brisbane (Australia) may lose the tennis matches for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games if it doesn’t improve its facilities.

Tennyson (Australia)-based Tennis Queensland is the governing body of tennis in Queensland promoting and facilitating participation in tennis at all levels and steering growth for the future.

The 5,500-capacity Queensland Tennis Centre, known during its development as the Tennyson Tennis Centre, is a tennis venue in Tennyson, Brisbane, Australia.

The 2032 Summer Olympics, officially the Games of the XXXV Olympiad and also known as Brisbane 2032 or Bris2032, is an upcoming international multisport event scheduled to take place from July 23rd-August 8th, 2032 with Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, as the main Host City.

The 2032 Summer Paralympics, or as the Games of the XIX Paralympiad, and also known as the 19th Summer Paralympic Games and branded as Brisbane 2032, or the abbreviation Bris2032, are an upcoming international multisport event parasports scheduled to be held in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, from August 24th-September 5th, 2032 about a month after the 2032 Summer Olympics.

‘tennis’ further stated that the Premier of Queensland David Crisafulli and the Deputy Premier of Queensland Jarrod Bleijie unveiled the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games venues and infrastructure plan on March 25th following a 100-day review process.

This comprehensive plan outlines the Government’s commitment to upgrading the key sports facilities across Queensland with the Queensland Tennis Centre being a pivotal venue in the Games delivery.

Tennis Queensland head honcho Cameron Pearson welcomed today’s (March 25th) announcement highlighting the importance of the funding for both the QTC and Queensland’s sporting future.

Pointed out Pearson, “The Queensland Tennis Centre is one of Australia’s most iconic tennis venues playing a crucial role in the development and promotion of tennis at both the national and international levels. While the QTC initially met community and event needs when it opened in 2009 it requires essential upgrades to be fit-for-purpose for the Olympic and Paralympic tennis events – this funding is critical to deliver that. We are thrilled to have received this support which not only demonstrates the Government’s confidence in tennis but also reinforces Queensland’s reputation as a global hub for sports excellence. This funding will enable us to enhance our facilities, develop our athletes and coaches and continue to drive the growth of tennis at all levels.”

Tennis Australia Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Craig Tiley, also welcomed the announcement, “The Queensland Tennis Centre is integral to the success of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2032 and we are delighted to be able to host this major event in what will be a world-class venue. This project will deliver significant economic benefits for Queensland and at the same time will inspire the future generations of tennis players and fans ensuring a lasting legacy that stays within the State for years to come.”

The Queensland Tennis Centre is currently home to the Brisbane International (a professional tennis tournament played on outdoor hard courts), the National Tennis Academy and regularly hosts elite international professional tournaments along with community events making it a key asset to Queensland and Australia’s sporting landscape.

The funding will support the construction of a new 3,000-seat roofed arena, the addition of 12 new International Tennis Federation (ITF) specification courts to meet the minimum requirements for the Olympic and Paralympic tennis events and upgraded player facilities to accommodate the large number of athletes, the support personnel and the fans.

Roehampton (UK)-based the International Tennis Federation (ITF) is the world governing body of tennis, one of the few truly global sports. The ITF’s mission is to further grow and promote the sport of tennis worldwide, to develop the game at all levels and ages and to make, amend and uphold the rules of the game.

Concluded Pearson, “We are grateful to all involved in the review process and look forward to maximizing this incredible opportunity for our athletes, the coaches and the fans as we build towards the 2032 Games and beyond. This will have a lasting legacy for the growth of the Brisbane International as well as attracting more events to Queensland.”
