KC Current planning another new stadium Image: KC Current

The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) team Kansas City Current in March 2024 opened the CPKC Stadium on the Berkley Riverfront (Kansas City, Missouri, US) as the first venue purpose-built for a professional women’s sports team.

‘KANSAS CITY BUSINESS JOURNAL’ stated that a year later the Current is advancing plans for a second, smaller stadium to the Northwest, near the team’s training complex and offices in Riverside.

The Kansas City Current is an American professional soccer team based in Kansas City, Missouri (US) that competes in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). It was founded as an expansion team in 2021. The team plays its home games at the CPKC Stadium.

The 11,500-capacity CPKC Stadium is a soccer-specific stadium located in Kansas City, Missouri (US) that serves as the home ground for the Kansas City Current of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). The stadium opened for the Current’s first home match of the 2024 season on March 16th, 2024.

‘KANSAS CITY BUSINESS JOURNAL’ further stated that the City’s Board of Aldermen recently approved an industrial development project plan for the Current’s KC WFC Riverside LLC (the development entity formed by the Kansas City Current professional women’s soccer team). The $16.8 million plan includes a 2,000-person outdoor soccer stadium with room for expanded seating, a 17,000-square-foot single-story performance center with indoor and outdoor training areas, locker rooms, a player lounge, and a multipurpose meeting room on 7.9 acres South of the Current’s $18 million training complex which opened in 2022.

More information on the new Riverside stadium and how the Current would use it was not available.

The Riverside Aldermen in March approved a final plan for the new stadium. At the time the City officials said it would give the Current another option for hosting soccer tournaments with smaller capacity needs. For example, the 11,500-seat CPKC Stadium in the Fall hosted the 2024 Big 12 Soccer Championship.

The Big 12 Conference is a collegiate athletic Conference in the United States. It consists of 16 full-member universities in the States of Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, and West Virginia. It is headquartered in Irving, Texas.

The Community Development Director Mike Duffy estimated the championship games drew 1,500 to 3,000 visitors and as such could move to the Riverside stadium in future years.

Those games previously have been played on the Current’s synthetic turf fields outside. Its City approvals come as the Current Co-Owners Angie and Chris Long roll out plans to build a global multiclub network starting with the Danish team HB Køge Women.

The HB Køge Women, commonly known as the HB Køge, is a Danish women’s football club based in Køge, Denmark. Founded in 2009 as the HB Køge Pigefodbold the club plays in the Elitedivisionen (top-flight league for women’s football in Denmark). They play their home matches at the 4,000-capacity Køge Stadium.

The city measure approved recently will provide the Current a sales tax exemption on construction materials for its new stadium and performance center. The project also sits within a broader tax increment financing plan Riverside approved in 1996. The Current plans a July 17th groundbreaking event for the development. Its construction could take a little over eight months, plans show.

The Current opened its Riverside training complex in 2022 with three practice pitches – two natural grasses and one turf – and later expanded with four more turf fields. The team also won final plan approval in October for a five-story, 134-room Hilton Garden Inn across from the complex.
