Ross Brett’s work is built around sound as he says, “Sound connects us to the world.” He is the Application Project Manager for Sports Facilities at L-Acoustics (the French manufacturer of loudspeakers).

L-Acoustics acoustics is born from the passion of marrying Art and Science to create something evocatively moving. Performance and power, amplification and precision, acoustics and electronics, all form a part of the L-Acoustics ecosystem.

One of the significant offering from L-Acoustics is the L-Series loudspeakers, the benchmark line array speakers for concert and professional sound systems in the entertainment industry. The L-Acoustics sound systems have been installed in over 13,000 premium venues worldwide.

With 25 years in the pro audio industry Ross Brett, Project Application Manager for Sports Facilities at L-Acoustics, is an experienced sound system designer for the stadiums and the arenas. He has developed a great understanding of the client needs to take their events to the next level for the ultimate fan experience by delivering innovative L-Acoustics sound systems to the sports facilities globally.

In a conversation with ‘Coliseum’, Ross Brett, Project Application Manager for Sports Facilities, L-Acoustics, France, presents a case study about the cutting-edge sound installation system deployed at the American Express Stadium in England (UK) and also talks about L-Acoustics breakthrough concept in concert sound. The Amex is the first stadium in the United Kingdom to install the cutting-edge entertainment system which is already used in several stadiums in the United States.

L-Acoustics

L-Acoustics is a French manufacturer of loudspeakers, amplifiers, marketing materials, and signal processing devices. Headquartered in Marcoussis, South of Paris (France) the company has offices in the United States, United Kingdom and Germany.

Remarked Ross Brett, “L-Acoustics provides immersive sound experiences and manufactures loudspeakers and electronics products. We calibrate the systems through a combination of on-site measurements, system optimization and technical briefings while also providing comprehensive education services to the users.”

L-Acoustics breakthrough concept in concert sound is the line source array, particularly their patented V-DOSC system. This innovation replaced the traditional “wall of sound” approach with a more elegant and precise solution delivering superior sound quality while requiring less power and space. The breakthrough concept in concert sound was made possible through the culmination of 30 years of intensive research and development (R&D) in software modeling, loudspeaker technology and electronics.

The V-DOSC is a large-format line source loudspeaker system developed by L-Acoustics known for its use in live sound reinforcement for the arenas and the stadiums.

Case Study

American Express Stadium

The 31,876-capacity Falmer Stadium, currently known as the American Express Stadium for sponsorship reasons and more commonly referred to as the Amex, is a football stadium in Falmer, Brighton and Hove, East Sussex, England (UK). It serves as the home stadium of the Premier League team Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club.

Brett informed that the L-Acoustics sound systems have been installed at the American Express Stadium in Brighton as part of a major audio upgrade completed by Solotech. The project, which included a complete redesign and installation of the stadium’s sound system, aims to enhance the fan experience with concert-quality sound and improved coverage for all the spectators. The project involved the installation of over 200 L-Acoustics speakers working in collaboration with audio consultants Vanguardia and contractors Solotech.

Added Brett, “We focused on delivering concert-grade clarity, high sound pressure levels (SPL), and immersive experiences for the fans. This involved ensuring full coverage of the seating areas, supporting music playback and enhancing speech intelligibility.

Challenges

He informed that the biggest challenge was the time-frame as the L-Acoustics sound system installation at the AMEX Stadium was a tight two-month window (installed during the Summer of 2024) during the football off-season. This required meticulous planning and execution to ensure the project was completed on time and to the club’s desired standard.

The unique stadium design was also a challenge and the need to deliver high-quality, even sound coverage to all the seating areas. This required a new approach to loudspeaker placement and system design to overcome potential sightline obstructions and ensure optimal sound distribution – “The challenge was also to ensure that the manufacturers supply the equipment within the time-frame. Due to the pandemic we faced the supply chain issues and still maintain production and equipment. There were a lot of things to do within a very short time-frame. The next challenge was the architectural aesthetics and we wanted that the design blend with the surrounding areas. The challenge with the roof beams at the Amex Stadium was ensuring the new L-Acoustics sound system could provide exceptional sound coverage while minimizing the visual and spatial impact.”

Wrap-up

Ross Brett wrapped up by stating, “Though full of challenges the L-Acoustics installation of the state-of-the-art sound system at the Amex Stadium was a Mission Success and they are incredibly happy with the system which is adding another dimension to the events.”
