Lyon arena update October 2021 Image: Live Nation Entertainment

The American global entertainment company Live Nation and the OL Groupe – the company which operates the French professional football club Olympique Lyonnais – recently signed a long term commercial agreement which will commence with the creation of the new Lyon-Decines Arena, a 16,000-capacity venue that will host around 100 concerts and events per year. The arena will be located on the Olympique Lyonnais valley site, and is on track for completion at the end of 2023.

The ‘Live Nation Entertainment’ stated that Live Nation, the world’s leading live entertainment company, will bring a well-stocked schedule of international artistes to the new venue, created by OL Groupe.

OL Groupe SA operates the Olympique Lyonnais football club. The company operates as a holding company generating revenues from broadcasting rights, ticket revenues, sponsorship, publicity, derived products, travel arrangements, and events. Olympique Lyonnais Groupe conducts property development activities with a new stadium project.

Olympique Lyonnais, commonly referred to as Lyon or OL, is a French professional football club based in Lyon in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes (France). It plays in France’s highest football division, Ligue 1. The club was established in 1950.

Parc Olympique Lyonnais, known for sponsorship reasons as Groupama Stadium, and in some competitions as Grand Stade de Lyon or Stade des Lumières, is a 59,186-seat stadium in Décines-Charpieu, in the Lyon Metropolis (France). It serves as the home ground of Olympique Lyonnais.

The Metropolis of Lyon, also known as Grand Lyon, is a French territorial collectivity located in the East-Central region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. OL Vallée is a massive project of the Ligue 1 club Olympique Lyonnais, the design of which was conceived when the Groupama Stadium (France) opened in 2016. Spread over a 50 ha site, it is all set to become a sports center of excellence and is scheduled to go on stream in 2024. The new complex will be attached to the Groupama Stadium in Décines which is the residence of Lyon.

California (US)-headquartered the Live Nation Entertainment is the world’s leading live entertainment company comprising global market leaders: Ticketmaster, Live Nation Concerts and Live Nation Sponsorship.

The ‘Live Nation Entertainment’ further stated that Live Nation has worked with OL Groupe since the Groupama Stadium opened in 2016, delivering premier concerts and international tours including artistes such as the Barbadian singer Rihanna, British rock band Coldplay and English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran to the stadium. This partnership continues to take on a new dimension, adding the new Lyon-Décines Arena to the catalog of compelling performance venues of Live Nation books, including the company’s own global portfolio of 200+ venues.

Noted Angelo Gopee, Managing Director, Live Nation France, “France is a country that lives and breathes music and entertainment, and we’re proud to bring a new arena to Lyon that will make it front and center for live entertainment by opening up a whole new touring market.”

The new, modular Arena will be adaptable to the type of event, of which there are scheduled to be 80-120 per year. It will have a capacity of 16,000 for concerts and 12,000 for sporting events. The Arena will be equipped with three stands facing the stage, and a fourth one which is removable, for use during sporting events. The space will also host esports events, which will complement the program of sporting events scheduled in the Arena.

The Lyon-Decines Arena and the events it hosts will drive economic benefits to the local community through jobs, tourism, hospitality, tax revenue, and more.

The association between these two iconic names in the world of sport and entertainment will put Greater Lyon back on the circuit of major international music events.

Commented Jean-Michel Aulas, CEO, Olympique Lyonnais, “This agreement with one of the world’s leaders in musical entertainment is a long-term one and breathes life into the OL Valley Arena project. We are extremely honored to have Live Nation alongside us, enabling our City to welcome high-quality international stars who will draw in spectators not only from Lyon but also from the surrounding region and beyond.”
