Lithuanias Darius and Girėnas Stadium completed Image: Kaunas City Municipality

The renovation of the Darius and Girėnas Stadium in Lithuania’s Kaunas has been completed, the Construction Inspectorate said recently.

‘LRT.IT’ quoted a statement sent out by the Kaunas City Municipality recently, “Lithuania has lived without a spiffy stadium for too long. Finally, we will be saved the embarrassment of not boasting a plush venue, and soon we will no longer be left red-faced in front of the elite section of the world’s football community.”

The Darius and Girėnas Stadium is a multiuse stadium in the Ąžuolynas Park in Žaliakalnis district of Kaunas, Lithuania. The all-seater stadium holds 15,315 people.

‘LRT.IT’ further stated that as per the municipality, the opening of the Darius and Girėnas Stadium will take place in mid-October.

The Kaunas stadium will be the biggest and the most state-of-the-art in Lithuania. It will also meet all the criteria laid down by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). This means that the facility will not only be able to host matches of the Lithuania national football team but also other UEFA tournaments.

The Lithuania national football team represents Lithuania in international football and is controlled by the Lithuanian Football Federation, the governing body for football in Lithuania. They played their first match in 1923.

Moreover, the stadium features a running track, so Lithuania’s second-largest City Kaunas will also be able to host athletic showcases.

The Darius and Girėnas Stadium can now hold 15,000 spectators, up from 9,000 before the renovation that began in the Summer of 2018 and the redecoration price tag stands at 43 million euros.

The Lithuanian capital Vilnius is currently demolishing its incomplete National Stadium. It expects to build a new stadium by late 2024.

The Lithuania National Stadium is a multiuse stadium in Vilnius, Lithuania, that has been under construction since 1987.
