The authorities announced on February 4th that the Kai Tak Sports Park’s (Kowloon, Hong Kong) main stadium will officially open on March 1st.

‘gbcode.rthk.hk’ stated that the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau made the announcement on social media where it said the 50,000-seat facility will be a “top choice venue” for international sports tournaments and large-scale entertainment events.

The Kai Tak Sports Park is a multipurpose sports venue that is being built at the site of the former Kai Tak Airport in Kowloon, Hong Kong, as part of the Kai Tak Development. The Sports Park will be located on the North Western part of the old Kai Tak Airport where some of the parking stands used to sit. With an area of around 28 hectares the Kai Tak Sports Park anchors the redevelopment of the former airport site and offers a world-class destination for all interests.

Taking center stage at the Kai Tak Sports Park will be the 50,000-seat ‘Pearl of the Orient’ themed Main Stadium. The stadium is complete with the latest technology in its retractable roof and also adopts a flexible pitch system which can be switched between quality natural turf for premier football or rugby events to other surface for a myriad of sports, entertainment and community events.

‘gbcode.rthk.hk’ further stated that the British band Coldplay will perform at the above venue on April 9th, 11th and 12th.

Separately, about 50,000 people participated in a drill at the sports park on the night of February 4th when the main stadium’s retractable roof opened for the first time.

They watched a Hong Kong Premier League U-22 match between the Kitchee SC and the North District FC.

The Kitchee SC is a Hong Kong professional football club based in Kowloon. It was founded in 1931 and currently competes in the Hong Kong Premier League, the top-division football league in Hong Kong. The 6,664-capacity Mong Kok Stadium in Mong Kok, Kowloon, Hong Kong, serves as their home field.

The North District Football Club is a Hong Kong professional football club which currently competes in the Hong Kong Premier League, the top tier of Hong Kong football. The 2,500-capacity North District Sports Ground in Sheung Shui, Hong Kong, serves as their home arena.

With the roof open, the Environmental Protection Department also monitored the audio levels to see if the noise generated at the venue could affect the nearby residents.
